Volkswagen Group sold 2.5 million vehicles for the first quarter of 2016, gaining a 0.8% increase thanks to strong sales in Europe and China. This comes despite the company’s involvement in an emission testing scandal in the US late last year.
Europe contributed 1,052,100 cars sold for the first quarter, up 3.3% from the previous year, followed by the Asia-Pacific region at 1,045,400. Most of those was from China that purchased 955,500 cars, an increase of 6.4%.
“There was a solid growth in Europe and Asia-Pacific regions in the first quarter of 2016. The Group recorded its best start to the year in China since entering the market there,” said Fred Kappler, Head of Group Sales at Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft.
In the US, Volkswagen had a 2.1% decline with 201,500 vehicles sold compared to last year’s 205,800. Other slow markets include Russia and South America.
Sales went particularly well in March with 967,100 cars sold worldwide. Majority of the numbers still came from Europe, up by 2.7% from the same month last year, and China with a 4% increase.
With Volkswagen reaching an agreement with US authorities regarding the emission testing, it’s believed that they can get back to much stronger sales.
