If you love cars, chances are you also want to learn how to work on one. If not, maybe you want to save a bit on maintenance, skip a visit to the mechanic, and handle things yourself with a bit of elbow grease.
Whatever your reasons, a bit of DIY skill can go a long way in keeping your car and wallet in top shape. However, not all car issues are equal, some require far more skill and training than a quick internet guide can provide.
With that said, we've listed a few common issues car owners experience and grouped them by whether they're DIY-able or whether they need professional attention.
Oil change - DIY
The ol’ oil and filter change is the single most important routine maintenance task you can perform on your car, and fortunately, it's one of the most beginner-friendly. All you need is the correct grade of engine oil for your vehicle, a compatible oil filter, a drain pan, a wrench set, and about 30 to 45 minutes of your time. The process involves warming up the engine briefly, draining the old oil from the drain plug beneath the car, swapping out the old filter, resealing the drain plug, and refilling with fresh oil through the top.
The reason this matters so much is that engine oil lubricates hundreds of moving metal parts — when it degrades, those parts grind against each other and wear down prematurely. Skipping oil changes is one of the leading causes of early engine failure, which can cost tens of thousands of pesos to repair or replace. Doing it yourself typically costs a fraction of the shop price and gives you direct control over the quality of oil going into your engine.
While you’re in there, a quick engine air filter and cabin air filter swap is also a task that requires minimum skill but can keep your car healthy for longer.
Replacing a battery - DIY
Like oil changes, all you need to replace a battery are a few tools, the right battery size for your car, caution and the right sequence. The golden rule is simple: always disconnect the negative terminal first when removing, and connect it last when installing. This prevents accidental short circuits that could damage your car's electronics or give you a nasty shock. Most batteries are held in place by a single bracket or clamp that lifts out easily. The tricky part for modern vehicles is that some may require a battery registration procedure through a diagnostic scanner to let the car's computer know a new battery has been installed — particularly in European brands like BMW or Mercedes. Without this step, the alternator may not charge the new battery correctly. For most Japanese and Korean models, however, it's a true plug-and-play job. A new battery typically lasts three to five years, and catching a failing one early, through slow cranking or warning lights, before it leaves you stranded is well worth the effort.
Changing out wipers - DIY
Few maintenance tasks offer a better effort-to-reward ratio than replacing wiper blades, and it's a job that can usually be done in under five minutes without a single tool. Wiper blades degrade steadily from UV exposure, heat, and constant friction against the windshield, the rubber hardens and cracks over time, leaving streaks, smears, and uncleared patches that seriously impair visibility in heavy rain. Aside from being an annoyance during light rain showers, it can become a legitimate safety concern that increases accident risk during storms.
Most modern blades use a simple hook, pinch-tab, or side-pin attachment that snaps on and off with gentle pressure, and the replacement blade will typically come with an instruction card covering the most common attachment types. The only real variable is the blade length, your owner's manual or an in-store fitment guide will confirm the correct size for both the driver and passenger sides, which are often different from each other. Blades should ideally be replaced every six to twelve months, or sooner if you notice any streaking or skipping. It's a small purchase and a five-minute job that has a direct and immediate impact on your driving experience in the rain.
Bulb replacement - DIY/ Requires professional help
Exterior bulb replacement is another task that sits firmly in DIY territory for most conventional vehicles, though the level of effort involved varies more than people expect depending on the car and the specific bulb in question. Tail lights, brake lights, and indicators are typically the easiest, they're often accessible by opening the boot or a small panel inside the boot lining, twisting out the bulb holder, and swapping the bulb itself in seconds. Headlights on older vehicles are similarly manageable: the bulb is usually reached directly from the engine bay by unclipping a rubber cover, disconnecting the wiring plug, and rotating the bulb free.
The important caution with halogen headlight bulbs is to never touch the glass with bare fingers, the oils from your skin create hot spots on the quartz glass that cause premature failure, so always handle them with a cloth or gloves. Where this job becomes a professional task is on newer vehicles equipped with full LED, matrix LED, or laser headlight systems. These units are sealed assemblies rather than replaceable bulbs, and accessing them often requires removing the front bumper or the entire headlight assembly. For those vehicles, what appears to be a simple bulb swap is actually a workshop job, so it's worth checking your specific model before assuming it's a quick fix.
Fluid top up - DIY
Cars rely on a number of different types of fluids to keep their various systems cool, lubricated, clean, and responsive, and checking and topping them up is something every driver should be comfortable doing.
Washer fluid is the most obvious, it’s a simple reservoir under the hood that you fill with a diluted cleaning solution. Coolant, which prevents your engine from overheating, has a dedicated overflow tank marked with min and max lines and should only be topped up when the engine is cold. Power steering fluid has its own reservoir and dipstick. Brake fluid is a different matter: if your brake fluid is consistently low, that indicates a leak in the system and warrants professional inspection immediately rather than just a top-up. Do exercise caution when topping up though, you should always use the correct specification for your vehicle, as mixing incompatible fluid types, particularly with coolant or transmission fluid, can cause serious and expensive damage.
Brake system jobs - Requires professional help
The braking system is the single most safety-critical component on any vehicle, and attempting to service it without proper knowledge, tools, and experience is a risk that simply isn't worth taking. While brake pad replacement might seem straightforward — and for skilled DIYers on older vehicles it can be — the broader brake system encompasses rotors, calipers, brake lines, master cylinders, and the hydraulic circuit, all of which must function with absolute precision.
A mistake in this area doesn't result in a car that runs rough or gets worse fuel economy — it results in a car that cannot stop. Rotors must be measured for thickness and lateral runout with a micrometer; calipers must be compressed or wound back correctly depending on the type; brake lines must be bled completely free of air bubbles or the pedal will feel spongy and ineffective. On some modern vehicles with electric parking brake actuators, a diagnostic scan tool is required just to retract the rear calipers before pads can be changed. Given that even a small error can have fatal consequences, this is a job where the cost of professional labour is cheaper than a potential accident.
Transmission repair - Requires professional help
The transmission is one of the most mechanically complex and financially unforgiving components in a vehicle, and it demands a level of expertise and specialised equipment that puts it firmly beyond the reach of most home mechanics.
Whether automatic or manual, the transmission is responsible for converting engine power into wheel motion across the full range of driving speeds, and its internal components — clutch packs, torque converters, planetary gear sets, solenoids, and valve bodies — are manufactured to tolerances measured in fractions of a millimetre.
A misaligned component, an incorrectly torqued bolt, or the introduction of even a small amount of contamination during reassembly can cause the entire unit to fail again shortly after the repair. Transmission fluid flushes are sometimes done DIY, but the correct fluid specification is critical and varies significantly between manufacturers. That’s because using the wrong type can degrade internal seals and clutch materials. Given that a full transmission replacement can cost anywhere from tens to hundreds of thousands of pesos, this is one area where getting a professional diagnosis first is always the right call.
Airbag & SRS Systems - Requires professional help
The supplemental restraint system, which includes airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, and their associated sensors and control modules, is arguably the most dangerous component in a car for an untrained person to work near. The issue is not just electrical complexity but physical danger: airbag inflators contain explosive propellant charges capable of deploying with enormous force, and the capacitors in the SRS control module can hold a lethal charge for several minutes even after the battery has been disconnected. An accidental deployment during a repair can result in serious injury.
Aside from the risk of injury, the SRS system is deeply integrated with the car's electronic architecture — a sensor moved slightly out of position, a connector reseated improperly, or a module replaced without proper recalibration can leave the system non-functional, meaning airbags that won't deploy in an actual crash. Diagnostic work on SRS faults requires manufacturer-level scan tools, and any physical repair must be followed by careful system verification. There is no scenario in which DIY work on airbag systems is advisable.
AC System / Refrigerant top-up - Requires professional help
Vehicle air conditioning systems are a closed-loop refrigerant circuit operating under significant pressure, and working on them without the correct equipment and certification is both dangerous and in many places illegal. Refrigerant gases or Freon as it is colloquially known, including the older R-134a and the newer R-1234yf used in modern vehicles, must be handled with specialist recovery and recharge machines that prevent venting to the atmosphere, which is regulated due to environmental impact. Exposure to refrigerant can cause frostbite on contact with skin and is harmful if inhaled.
Even if you get past the dangers and legalities associated with fixing AC systems, accurately diagnosing an AC problem requires pressure testing the system, checking for leaks with UV dye, testing compressor operation, and verifying the expansion valve and condenser, all of which require workshop equipment. Simply recharging with a consumer DIY can from a parts shop is at best a temporary patch that doesn't address the underlying leak, and at worst introduces air or moisture into the system that causes compressor damage. AC service is best handled by a technician with the right tools and refrigerant handling certification.
Suspension and steering - Requires professional help
The suspension and steering systems are what dictate how your car handles, absorbs road impacts, and maintains directional stability, and working on them incorrectly can result in unpredictable handling that is every bit as dangerous as brake failure. Components like shock absorbers, struts, control arms, ball joints, tie rods, and sway bar links all involve significant mechanical loads and in some cases components under spring tension that can release with dangerous force if disturbed incorrectly. Coil spring compressors, for example, must be used properly when removing strut assemblies, as an improperly contained spring can cause severe injury.
Furthermore, virtually any replacement of steering or suspension components requires a four-wheel alignment afterward, meaning you still have to go to a mechanic anyway. Skipping this step results in uneven tire wear, pulling to one side, and compromised handling. The combination of physical risk during the job and mandatory specialised equipment afterward makes suspension work a clear professional territory for most car owners.
Major engine repairs - Requires professional help
An engine overhaul, whether a top-end job addressing the cylinder head, valves, and camshaft, or a full bottom-end rebuild involving the crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, and bearings, requires the engine to be partially or completely removed from the vehicle, disassembled down to individual components, measured, machined, cleaned, and reassembled to precise manufacturer tolerances. This isn’t a matter of mechanical confidence alone; it requires access to equipment that simply does not exist in a home garage, including engine hoists, stands, torque angle gauges, bore gauges, valve spring compressors, and in many cases a machine shop for resurfacing cylinder heads or reboring worn cylinder walls.
Every internal engine component must be measured against specification, a bearing clearance that is a few thousandths of a millimetre too loose will cause knocking and accelerated wear; a head gasket surface that is not perfectly flat will result in coolant or compression leaks that bring the engine straight back to failure. Reassembly must follow a precise sequence with exact torque values applied in the correct pattern and order, and the engine must be properly primed with oil before first start to prevent catastrophic dry-start damage to the freshly machined surfaces.
The cost of a professional engine overhaul is significant, easily ranging from P50,000 to well over P200,000 depending on the engine type and extent of the work, but attempting it without the right skills, tools, and environment risks turning a rebuildable engine into scrap metal. If your vehicle has reached the point where an overhaul is being considered, the conversation with a trusted mechanic should also include whether a quality secondhand or remanufactured engine might offer better value and reliability than rebuilding the original.
