Electric vehicles (EVs) have gained a steady foothold in the Philippine market. Though they’re nowhere near as prevalent as internal combustion engines, the choice of EVs in the Philippines has grown over the past few years, spanning a wide price range.
Now, though the EV market has grown quite a bit, charging infrastructure is still not quite widespread, so if you’re looking to get an EV, it likely won’t be your main mode of transportation. So what are your choices if you’re looking for an EV in a specific budget, say, P1,000,000? Using our comprehensive Car Guide, we’ve selected the following EVs which can be great urban runabouts that also slide under P1,000,000.
VinFast VF3
We start off the list with arguably the most muscular-looking small EV in the market, the VinFast VF3. The VF3 is equipped with a single electric motor, producing 43 hp and 110 Nm of torque, powered by an 18.94 kWh battery. This setup provides a range of up to 210 km on a full charge. With fast charging capability, the battery can recharge from 10 percent to 70 percent in just 36 minutes, making it ideal for everyday city driving.
Inside, the VF3 has enough seating for four, and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering mobile connectivity and other conveniences. All of this EV goodness is available to buyers starting at P645,000 with VinFast’s battery subscription option and P745,000 if buyers opt to buy the battery pack.
JETOUR Ice Cream EV
Cute, compact, and as colorful as ice cream, JETOUR’s Ice Cream EV has the looks and stance worthy of its name. The JETOUR Ice Cream EV is driven by a 27 hp Chery TZ160XFDM13A electric motor paired with a lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering a range of up to 170 km and a top speed of 100 km/h.
Its size makes it easy to maneuver in traffic, while its advanced electric technology ensures a sustainable and efficient drive. With a blend of style, functionality, and eco-friendliness, the Ice Cream EV is an excellent choice for modern, eco-conscious drivers looking for a fun, efficient vehicle for city trips. The small size does come with compromises in terms of cargo space but if you’re just looking for an inexpensive EV to ferry you around the city, the Ice Cream is worth your consideration. As for price, the Ice Cream has an affordable price tag of P699,000.
BYD Seagull
Going up in size we have the BYD Seagull. The Seagull is a five-door electric city car with charming proportions and a sleek, sporty look. It’s equipped with a 30 kWh BYD Blade Battery, providing a range of up to 300 kilometers on a single charge, reducing the need for frequent recharging. Powered by a 74 hp electric motor and delivering 135 Nm of torque, the Seagull reaches a top speed of 130 km/h and can accelerate from zero to 50 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, ideal for nimble handling in city traffic.
Charging is impressively fast, with a DC fast charger bringing the battery from 30 percent to 80 percent in only 30 minutes, while a full charge via an AC wall outlet takes about five hours. Additionally, the Seagull’s vehicle-to-load capability lets you power devices and small appliances on the go, adding flexibility for outdoor activities. Plus, with the Seagull’s larger proportions, this five-door hatchback is capable of seating up to five passengers. The BYD Seagull is available with a price tag of P898,000.
DFSK Candy Mini EV
Another compact four-seater EV is the Candy Mini EV from DFSK. The Candy mini EV is equipped with a 16.8 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePo) battery that powers a rear-mounted electric motor, delivering 40 hp and 100 Nm of torque to the rear wheels. This setup provides a range of up to 220 km based on the CLTC cycle. For charging, the Candy uses a Type 2 connector, compatible with most EV charging stations in the country, and requires about four to 4.5 hours to recharge from 10 percent to 90 percent charge using a 3.3 kW AC charger.
Inside, the Candy is equipped with a dual-screen dashboard setup, providing a modern and interactive interface. With all seats in place, there’s ample room to comfortably seat four occupants. For added versatility, the rear seats can fold down in a 50:50 split, expanding the cargo area to up to 843 liters, making it easy to adapt the space for larger loads.
As for the price, the sole variant of the Candy Mini EV has a price tag of P658,000.
Bestune Pony
Next on our list is the Pony from Bestune. Featuring the same formula as the rest, compact size, and a decent-sized battery pack, the Pony is another EV worth considering if you’re looking for a city runabout.
Modern, lightweight, and affordable, the Pony provides a fun and convenient driving experience, complete with essential features suited for urban life. The Pony features a front-wheel-drive setup powered by a single electric motor, delivering 26 hp and 85 Nm of torque for smooth, quiet acceleration characteristic of electric vehicles. Its 13.9 kWh battery provides a practical range for city driving, while its top speed is limited to 100 km/h. It won’t win any drag races but it’s sure to bring you to your destination without having to spend money on fuel.
