The Coolray crossover is arguably what led Geely’s resurgence in the Philippine market back in 2019, piquing the public’s interest thanks to its genuinely head-turning design and accessible price point. A few years have passed since then, and while the strengths of the Coolray since it first launched remain, other models in the segment are catching up.
As such, Geely introduced a vastly updated Coolray as part of its soft relaunch late last year. Now sporting a redesigned exterior, a new engine, and even more tech than before, the Coolray is eager to get back into the ring to remind us of what it can offer. Interested to see what’s new, we’ve browsed the Coolray’s spec sheet and have come up with five cool things in the new Coolray that make it a damn cool crossover.
Reworked exterior
An update wouldn’t be an update if the exterior didn’t get some love, and the Coolray definitely got enough in this area. The front end of the new Coolray gets a redesigned version of Geely’s Energy Matrix LED lights, a honeycomb-styled lower grille, and a more aggressive trim piece at the sides of the bumper, and a thin chrome trim that accentuates the grille for a modern and sporty look. The alloy wheels get a new tomahawk-styled design that not only improves the overall look, it also gives the Coolray a more agile stance.
The rear end of the Coolray also gets the same amount of love. The Coolray now gets wraparound LED taillights, a sharper, more aggressively styled bumper, and a honeycomb pattern is added to the black plastic trim piece for the bumper. The styling elements we loved about the original were retained, like the spoiler, dual exhaust tips, and central rear fog light, but with minor tweaks to keep it fresh.
To sum up our thoughts about the new Coolray, we believe it’s a great revision of the original design. It keeps the spirit that makes the Coolray so appealing, but modernizes it, giving it the appearance of an all-new generation instead of a simple nip-and-tuck.
Refined power
Before, the Geely Coolray was powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine producing 177 hp and 255 Nm of torque. Now, the updated Coolray is packing a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It packs fewer horses at 171 hp, but it gets more torque with 290 Nm on tap. Additionally, the addition of another cylinder means the Coolray’s new engine will be more refined than before, resulting in reduced vibrations during idling and acceleration. The new NordThor powerplant is paired with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, which means, like before, the Coolray will provide an engaging drive to go with its exciting looks.
An interior with polish
The exterior isn’t the only thing new with the Coolray; updates inside help keep the cabin feeling fresh as well. The sporty interior remains, but Geely has refined it to look more modern and mature. The red accents on the seats, center armrest, and dashboard are still present, yet they’re now more subtle, blending with the matte silver trim and black plastics instead of overpowering them. Despite the cleaner look, the Coolray hasn’t abandoned its playful personality; rhythmic ambient lighting still adds a sense of occasion every time you step inside.
The new Coolray embraces its sporty character on the outside but feels more toned down and sophisticated on the inside. Much like how a crossover blends the practicality of an SUV with the comfort of a sedan, the Coolray lets you enjoy a fun, lively drive while still offering a soothing ride when all you want is to get home in peace.
A packed tech suite
Moving further into the cabin, the new Coolray brings a notable upgrade in its technology package. It now features an integrated dual-screen layout consisting of a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 12.3-inch infotainment display. The infotainment system also gains standard Apple CarPlay, making smartphone integration more seamless than before. New conveniences include rear air vents for improved passenger comfort and a wireless charging pad to keep devices powered on the go.
Complementing these are features such as a power tailgate, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, induction-type wipers, automatic climate control, and passive entry with push-button start. Together, they elevate the Coolray’s tech-filled experience while still keeping the vehicle at an attainable price point. All of this rounds out an interior that feels smarter and more premium without drifting away from what made the Coolray appealing in the first place: modern tech, everyday convenience, and value that’s hard to ignore.
Advanced Driver Aids
The new Coolray elevates its safety suite with a stronger mix of intelligent systems and driver-focused protection. One of the standout additions is the 540-degree HD panoramic system paired with an intelligent four-way HD DVR, giving drivers a clearer, more comprehensive view of their surroundings, particularly useful in tight parking spaces or busy streets where the Coolray will find itself most.
Backing this up is a full range of electronic safety aids. ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and TCS (Traction Control System) help keep the vehicle composed during sudden maneuvers, while Auto Hold, EPB (Electronic Parking Brake), and HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist) provide confidence in stop-and-go traffic and emergencies. For varying road conditions, systems like HHC (Hill Hold Control) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensure you won’t get caught off-guard on steep inclines.
Long drives are made easier with Cruise Control (CCS), and in the event of an impact, the Coolray’s six airbags offer crucial protection for occupants. Altogether, these features combine to give the Coolray a more secure and reassuring driving experience, one that matches its modern performance and design upgrades.
All things considered, these features make the Coolray a standout crossover in its segment, but the coolest part is still its price. The lineup starts with the 1.5 Comfort Plus at P989,000 and tops out with the 1.5 Sport Plus at P1,149,000. At these price points, it’s easy to see why so many Filipinos fell in love with the Coolray from the beginning: it delivers a premium driving experience without the premium cost.
