Five things we love about the Suzuki XL7 Hybrid

The Suzuki XL7 made its official debut in the Philippines back in 2020 and was met with a positive reception. What made the XL7 shine was the fact that Suzuki made an effort to really differentiate the XL7 from the Ertiga on which it’s based. So, despite it sharing most of the components with the Ertiga, the XL7 justified its higher price tag by providing a different experience.

Recently, the mild-hybrid version of the XL7 officially launched in the country, joining the Ertiga which now also features Suzuki’s mild-hybrid system. Now that the XL7 Hybrid is here, let’s take a look at the features we love the most about Suzuki’s seven-seater crossover.

Suzuki XL7 Hybrid Engine

Let’s start with the biggest change with the XL7 Hybrid, its powertrain. New to the XL7 Hybrid is the inclusion of Suzuki’s smart-hybrid system. At the heart of this system is Suzuki’s Integrated Starter Generator or ISG which can charge a 12-volt lithium-ion hybrid and take over the conventional alternator.

Unlike a standard automobile alternator, which relies on a belt to produce voltage for a vehicle, the ISG has the added capability of driving the belt to offer a bit more power and lessen fuel consumption. We already know that the K15B is one of the most fuel-efficient engines on the market on its own, so adding the ISG to the mix will make its fuel consumption even better.

XL7 Exterior

The XL7 boasts a clean design overall. Its additional cladding on the sides doesn't create an overly wide appearance, and the faux skid plates at the front and rear blend seamlessly, maintaining its sleek profile. The front-end design, unique to the XL7, adds distinctiveness to Suzuki's lineup. Functionally, the exterior features LED headlights and DRLs complemented by halogen fog lamps.

Riding on 16-inch two-tone wheels, the XL7 offers 200 mm of ground clearance, enhanced by roof rails for added utility. While the rear retains hints of the Ertiga, it's executed cleanly. Not overly accessorized, the XL7 appeals to the more conservative buyer and we think, it will look good even after a few years have gone by.

The XL7 steps up its technology game with a generous 10-inch infotainment screen featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Coupled with a six-speaker audio system delivering respectable quality and volume, the XL7 promises a satisfying audio experience.

In addition to these enhancements, the XL7 offers an array of features which include a backup camera, rear parking sensors, cruise control, and an electronic stability program. The cabin also includes convenient amenities such as USB ports and 12-volt sockets in the front, second, and third rows.

Considering its price point and segment, the XL7's tech package is competitive, if not slightly superior, thanks to its smartphone integration capabilities and added goodies like keyless entry with push-button start.

Another aspect where the XL7 Hybrid edges over its Ertiga sibling is its 200 mm ground clearance. Sure, the Ertiga’s 180 mm may be enough to make you not worry about the odd pothole here and there, but, the XL7’s additional 20 mm of height means you have more confidence when you drive through notoriously rutted roads like EDSA without fear.

Suzuki XL7 ISG

The constant rise of fuel prices is a definite worry for owners of gasoline-powered vehicles, so saving up on fuel wherever possible is a priority for many drivers. Luckily, the XL7 Hybrid’s mild-hybrid system includes Suzuki’s Engine-Auto-Stop-Start System.

This feature allows the XL7 Hybrid to automatically shut down its engine when stationary, effectively minimizing fuel consumption that would have been lost through idling. Once you step on the gas, the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) swiftly restarts the engine, enabling seamless acceleration and saving you some extra fuel.
