MG has carved out a strong reputation in recent years as an automaker that truly knows how to build crossovers. From nimble subcompacts to confident mid-sizers, the brand seems to have a model ready for every corner of the crossover segment, each designed to deliver a well-rounded driving experience.
Now, MG is strengthening its presence in the Philippines further with the arrival of its newest contender: the MG HS Hybrid+ compact crossover. We got an early look at the freshly launched HS, and after exploring its features and capabilities, we’ve rounded up five reasons why it could be the smarter pick over other hybrids on the market today.
Certified five-star safety
Before we start discussing the crossover's tech suit, the MG HS Hybrid+ also delivers an impressive range of safety systems, many of which are typically found in more expensive hybrid models. To start, the HS Hybrid+ comes equipped with speed-sensing auto door locks, an Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Traction Control System (TCS), Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), a Hazard Warning System (HAZ), Brake Disc Wiping (BDW), Active Rollover Protection (ARP), Hill-Descent Control (HDC), and Hill-Start Assist (HSA).
Other safety-focused features include seat belt reminders for both front and rear passengers, ISOFIX child-seat anchor points, front, side, and curtain airbags, an anti-theft alarm system, an engine immobilizer, and front and rear parking sensors.
Finally, the HS Hybrid+ is equipped with MG’s MG Pilot ADAS suite, which not only enhances everyday safety but also helps reduce the risk of collisions. The suite includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Intelligent High Beam Control (IHBC), Active Emergency Braking (with pedestrian and bicycle detection), Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), a Door Open Warning (DOW) system, Rear Collision Warning (RCW), Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB), Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA), a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), a Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK), and Forward Collision Warning (FCW).
The safety features are only half the story. The HS Hybrid+ also boasts a strong crash-test pedigree: it earned a five-star rating from Euro NCAP under the 2024 testing protocols. On top of that, the HS achieved a five-star ANCAP rating when tested against the latest criteria. In short, the HS Hybrid+ doesn’t just bring premium-level technology to the table; it pairs it with serious safety credentials.
Loaded to the brim with features
Next up, we'll be discussing the HS Hybrid+'s extensive list of features. The tech package starts with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen equipped with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, eight speakers, four USB ports, a wireless charging pad, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The cabin continues to impress with a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, a push-start system, and keyless entry.
Comfort and premium touches also elevate the riding experience, including a panoramic sunroof, privacy glass for the rear passenger windows, and leather upholstery. Moving to the outside, the HS Hybrid+ continues to impress with LED headlights, power folding wing mirrors with a heater function, front and rear fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, and slick 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels. A quick look at the HS’s spec sheet might lead you to believe you’re looking at something from the premium end of the market. Finding all these features in a compact crossover at the HS’s price point is not only surprising, it’s genuinely compelling.
Lots of space for the family with room to grow
The MG HS may be classified as a compact crossover, but when it comes to interior size, it’s a strong contender in its segment. The HS Hybrid+ measures 4,655 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,664 mm in height, with a generous 2,765 mm wheelbase. These dimensions strike a smart balance: the HS remains manageable for daily city driving, easy to park, and maneuver. yet offers noticeably more space than many similarly sized hybrids.
Inside, that larger footprint translates to a roomier cabin that can comfortably fit a family of five. Passengers enjoy ample headroom and legroom in both rows, and the wide stance contributes to a spacious, airy feel. The HS Hybrid+ also offers a practical cargo area, making it ideal for weekend trips, grocery runs, or school-day hauls. Specifically, opening the hands-free power tailgate reveals 441 liters of space with the second row in place, expanding to 1,291 liters when the second row is folded.
In short, the HS Hybrid+ hits a sweet spot: compact enough for urban life, but spacious enough to serve as a true family-ready crossover.
Exceptional fuel efficiency
Powering the MG HS Hybrid+ is a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine paired with an electric motor, channeling power to the front wheels through a three-speed hybrid transmission. While we don’t have our own fuel economy figures yet, MG UK claims the HS Hybrid+ can achieve 5.2 L/100 km, or roughly 19.2 km/L. Combined with its 55-liter fuel tank, this efficiency gives the HS Hybrid+ an impressive range, making it equally at home as a city runabout or a long-distance cruiser.
The hybrid setup also provides a smooth and responsive driving experience. Electric assistance helps reduce engine load during stop-and-go traffic, while the turbocharged gasoline engine delivers enough punch for highway overtakes and spirited drives. The three-speed hybrid transmission ensures seamless power delivery, balancing efficiency with performance, and making every drive feel refined and effortless. Going back to the topic of power, though, we’ll continue more below.
Economical and powerful
We’ve stated earlier that the HS Hybrid+ features a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and an electric motor, but we haven’t told you how powerful it is yet. According to MG, the gasoline engine develops 141 hp and 230 Nm of torque, while the electric motor adds 144 hp and 340 Nm of torque. Together, this setup delivers a driving experience that is both responsive and efficient, allowing the crossover to handle city streets, highway cruising, and overtaking with confidence. The electric motor provides instant torque at low speeds, making stop-and-go traffic effortless, while the turbocharged engine ensures the vehicle feels lively when acceleration is needed.
Drivers benefit from the smooth integration of gasoline and electric power, which helps maximize efficiency without compromising the driving characteristics of the vehicle. Whether navigating urban traffic or taking on a weekend road trip, the HS Hybrid+ delivers an engaging, practical, and efficient driving experience that few hybrids in its class can match.
