As many car enthusiasts know, Mazda takes its name from its founder, Jujiro Matsuda, who originally established the company as a cork manufacturer under the name Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd. The Mazda name first appeared when the company shifted from producing cork to building three-wheeled trucks, beginning with the Mazda-Go.
What is less known, however, is that the Mazda name is inspired by Ahura Mazda, the Zoroastrian god of harmony, intelligence, and wisdom, whose name shares the same pronunciation.
Mazda’s choice of name is more than a historical footnote—it reflects the brand’s enduring philosophy. Much like the ideals embodied by Ahura Mazda, harmony, intelligence, and wisdom continue to guide the company’s approach to carmaking. Every lesson learned over decades of innovation shapes the next generation of vehicles—an ethos best represented today by the Mazda CX-60. If you’re curious about how that philosophy comes to life in the CX-60, read on.
Evolution of the Kodo Design
Mazda’s current lineup is shaped by the brand’s Kodo design philosophy, a concept that translates to “Soul of Motion.” Introduced by Mazda’s Global Head of Design, Ikuo Maeda, Kodo intends to capture the beauty of movement and emotion in every curve and contour of Mazda’s cars.
The Mazda CX-60 embodies what the brand calls Evolved Kodo Design, a next-generation interpretation that sets the tone for future Mazda vehicles. Its exterior retains the signature Kodo elegance but introduces an added sense of “Noble Toughness,” blending sophistication, sensuality, and a commanding presence. With its long hood and short rear deck, echoing the proportions of a classic sports car, the CX-60 projects both strength and grace. An upright grille adds a sense of height, while L-shaped daytime running lights with Mazda’s signature wings emphasize the vehicle’s confident, wide stance.
Not only does the CX-60 elevate Mazda’s design philosophy on the outside, but its interior also showcases the brand’s interpretation of premium luxury. The cabin embraces a minimalist design, creating a soothing and warm atmosphere. From the center console to the steering wheel and seats, every element of the CX-60’s interior feels purposeful—like components of a finely tuned machine working in harmony to ensure the comfort of every passenger.
Advancement of Jinba-Ittai
If you assume that Jinba-Ittai only applies to the MX-5 roadster, think again. Every Mazda embodies this principle, and the CX-60 represents its most advanced interpretation yet.
At the heart of the CX-60’s development is Mazda’s Large Product Group platform, which serves as the foundation for this next generation of vehicles. This architecture gives engineers the flexibility to optimize the powertrain layout, enabling handling-focused features such as an independent front double-wishbone suspension. It also allows for longitudinally mounted engines, a configuration typically reserved for performance-oriented vehicles.
Powering the CX-60 is the new 3.3-liter e-Skyactiv-G inline-six engine, developed under Mazda’s “right-sizing” philosophy. It delivers 280 hp between 5,000 and 6,000 rpm and 450 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm. That’s enough grunt to propel this crossover from zero to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 219 km/h. A newly developed Skyactiv eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to the drive wheels, tuned to complement the rear-biased i-Activ all-wheel-drive system for a truly balanced and engaging drive.
The Mazda CX-60 is more than a showcase of engineering; it’s a statement of intent. It embodies everything the brand stands for: harmony, intelligence, and the pure joy of motion. Every line, every curve, and every drive reflects the spirit of Jinba-Ittai. In the CX-60, Mazda’s story comes full circle, honoring its past while confidently shaping the road ahead.
