Sports Utility Vehicles or SUVs are popular in the local automotive industry because they offer more passenger space, luggage carrying capacity, versatility, and capability to drive on varied road and driving conditions.
One good example of these is Mitsubishi's segment challenger, the 2016 Montero Sport. Launched earlier this year by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC), this vehicle is now on its 3rd generation and is designed from the ground up.
It comes in 4 variants; the entry-level GLS 4x2 AT (P1,500,000), the GLS Premium 4x2 AT (P1,685,000), the GLS 4x4 MT (1,785,000), and the top-of-the-line GT 4x4 AT (P1,998,000). This article focuses on the range-topping variant so as to emphasize the model’s resume of features and capabilities.

For starters, the 2016 Montero Sport comes with a remote key fob with Keyless Operation System (KOS) for easier occupant entry. Inside, it features a classy black motif with silver and wood grain trims. Meanwhile, its 7 leather-clad seats are fashioned with multi-layer cushioning for better support and improved comfort, especially on long journeys.

To keep the driver updated of all the things happening on the vehicle’s systems, there a high-resolution digital information display that’s found on the dash. This can be helpful in monitoring fuel consumption, environment temperature, and mileage. Best part is that it also reminds the driver of when to have the vehicle serviced for maintenance.
On the center dash is a 6.75-in touch screen Multimedia Information System which supports GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and smartphone mirror link. It also plays DVD, MP3, AM/FM radio, iPod, and other multimedia devices by way of Aux-in and USB port. On top of that, the LCD monitor also displays a wide view from the vehicle’s reverse camera, which can be handy when backing up the vehicle.

For safety, the SUV comes with 7 SRS airbags and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force distribution (EBD). In an event wherein quick and hard braking is needed, the 2016 Montero Sport can help boost brake power with its Brake Assist System (BAS). It also assist the driver in safely driving up or down steep slopes via the Hill Start Assist (HSA) and the Hill Descent Control (HDC) features. And for those situations that need better control like driving on slippery, muddy, wet, or rough roads, the vehicle utilizes its Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control (M-ASTC).
Moreover, the brand also fitted the 2016 Montero Sport with Blind Spot Warning (BSW) which alerts the driver of vehicles unnoticed on the side and rear view mirrors. There’s also the Forward Collision Mitigation System (FCMS) which relies on a grille-mounted radar that warns the driver of a possible frontal collision and boosts the brake pressure as needed so the driver can stop on time, evade, or at least soften the impact.
Under the hood of the 2016 Montero Sport is a new 2.4L inline 4-cylinder turbo diesel MIVEC engine that produces 181 hp and 430 Nm of torque. It is then mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. What’s more is that the SUV’s powertrain consists of a Super Select 4WD II system with Off-Road Mode Selector and Rear Differential Lock Switch to provide a smoother driving experience, especially on unpaved and rocky mountain roads.

With its stylish exterior, refined interior, and new engine, the 2016 Mitsubishi Montero Sport is a promising contender in the local SUV segment.
