Ford Ranger Philippines

The Ford Ranger’s a truck that’s probably on your wish list, otherwise, why would you be reading more about it? Kidding. Or are we? The Ranger is one heck of a pickup truck in its segment, not just in terms of its looks, but also because of its features. There are a ton of things to list, but here are the five standout ones that we feel contribute a ton to the pickup’s desirability.

Ford 2.0-liter turbo-diesel motor

When we first got wind that the Ranger and the Everest lineups will be getting a new engine from Ford, we were a bit skeptical. Downsizing an engine isn’t good unless you’re going for a Turbo. In the Ranger Wildtrak’s case, we got an extra turbo on top of the standard single turbo setup that most other pickups have, netting us one of the highest horsepower and torque figures we’ve ever seen in a midsize pickup.

On the lower end of things, the baser trims of the Ranger get a 2.0-liter with a single turbo, but it still makes decent horsepower and torque, plus it makes quick work of most hauling and daily driving tasks. Either powertrain will also give you a 10-speed automatic transmission, which is the most number of gears for its class. The sheer number of horsepower, torque, and gears were enough then, and they still are now, and people seem to like what Ford’s done even with a smaller displacement compared to the rest of the competition.

Another feature that we’d love to have in all cars (actually) is that portrait-oriented infotainment display. It’s unconventional to see that in a midsize pickup, let alone a pickup truck. Whereas other manufacturers are comfortable with putting larger and wide screens, Ford thought that going taller is better. By doing so, you can keep your Android Auto or Apple CarPlay screen, but you can still retain the rest of the on-screen stuff without having to switch out of a menu.

The versatility of the Ranger’s information system is heightened by the inclusion of a fully-digital 10-inch screen for the driver that shows all the pertinent driving information in addition to the tachometer, speedometer, and trip meter. You can monitor the status of your driving aids through the gauge display, fetch trip data, know what driving mode you’re in, and have a pleasurable experience just casually checking your speed on the highway.

Whether you’re out on an adventure or crawling through the dense urban jungles, a 360-degree view monitor is a cheat code that you’d be glad to use. Cars are getting bigger nowadays, and the Ranger has grown considerably in size over the years. As such, we’re happy whenever a manufacturer gives us a variant with a 360-degree monitor.

The feature makes life so easy. Parking is a breeze, and squeezing through traffic is a piece of cake, navigating a tight turn is not nerve-wracking, and driving on the trail doesn’t require a spotter. Everything is easy when you can see everything around the car.

Ford Ranger NCAP

While Ford loves fitting all the latest gadgets to its vehicles, the Blue Oval doesn’t skip on the crash safety ratings. The Ranger and its SUV twin, the Everest, both have an ASEAN NCAP score of five stars, making them one of the safest vehicles in their respective segments.

All the driving aids and the safety tech is augmented by the actual crash testing that was conducted, and both models performed admirably. The Ranger, specifically, was able to score 84 percent in the Adult Occupant criteria and 93 percent in the Child Occupant criteria.

Ford has always had a special touch when it comes to designing pickup trucks. For starters, it’s the company’s bread and butter, and on the other hand, the F-150’s to blame for that prowess. We get some nods to the F-150’s iconic design. Ford may not list “style” on the spec sheet, but the looks may tug on your heartstrings as hard as that diesel engine can pull.

LED lights serve as a nice frontal statement piece and it’s in the shape that’s inspired by its bigger pickup brother. On top of that, the grille that we’ve come to love with the previous generation gets an evolutionary redesign in the Next-Gen model. On top of exterior enhancements, the interior has a ton of tech for you to enjoy, and the materials are some of the best that you can get in the segment today.

It also helps that there is a nice sense of durability with regard to this interior. So whether you’re entering the car with dirty hands and feet, or even a wet behind, know that Ford’s favorite motto of being “Built Ford Tough” is apparent, at least in the time that we’ve had with the car.
