The BT-50 is Mazda’s offering for the mid-size pickup truck segment. It’s without a doubt the most rugged vehicle in Mazda’s lineup, especially when put alongside its more elegant crossover siblings.
Mazda’s pickup truck has spanned three generations now and with its age coming close to the five-year mark, we thought it would be a great time to take another look at the current generation BT-50 and see what makes it shine against its rivals.
A combination of elegance and rugged utility

Pickup trucks as a class of vehicles were never designed with beauty in mind, it’s meant to be tough, reliable, and powerful. These three qualities are pretty much what you will see if you’re shopping around for a new truck, some designs may be boxy or more angular than others but the theme remains the same throughout: power.
Mazda’s lineup meanwhile consists of tame, elegant, and rather beautiful machines. They look good at any angle. Each cut, curve, and line of the body feels like it serves a special purpose. Ruggedness, therefore, isn’t the first thing you think of when you look at a Mazda.

The BT-50 is a special case, Mazda has ridden a fine line between incorporating its trademark Kodo design language into a type of vehicle that’s meant to look mean and rough. One look at the BT-50 and you know they’ve succeeded in making it work.
Though it’s based on the third-generation D-MAX, the BT-50 differentiates itself from its Isuzu counterpart. Like how we described Mazda’s lineup design earlier, the BT-50’s exterior is much the same way. Its redesigned front fascia boasts a striking four-slat grille that seamlessly complements the sculpted LED headlights. Beneath these, sleek vertical lighting units elegantly integrate LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and fog lamps.

From the side, the BT-50 exudes sophistication with its refined silhouette. Rugged details like the step board and roof rails provide a robust touch, while the chrome-trimmed door handles and black plastic wheel arch flares add an eye-catching blend of style and functionality.
Capable with reliable performance
Underneath the BT-50’s body is a powertrain that comes from a truck we’re all familiar with, the Isuzu D-MAX. Like the D-MAX, propelling the BT-50 is Isuzu’s 4JJ3-TCX four-cylinder turbodiesel engine which produces 187 hp and 450 Nm of torque. This truck is available in two drivetrain configurations: front-engine rear-wheel-drive and front-engine four-wheel-drive. Delivering this power to the wheels is a choice of two transmission options, a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.

The BT-50 is equipped with an independent double-wishbone suspension at the front and robust leaf springs at the rear, providing an optimal mix of comfort and utility. Its braking system features ventilated disc brakes with hydraulic and vacuum servo assistance at the front, complemented by drum brakes at the rear.
While the BT-50 is designed with a lifestyle-oriented focus, its well-engineered features ensure it retains the strength and functionality expected from a dependable pickup truck, making it more than capable of handling heavy-duty tasks and hauling with ease.
A versatile package fit for all seasons
The Mazda BT-50 stands out as a versatile lifestyle-oriented pickup truck. It’s the ideal choice for those seeking a vehicle that’s stylish yet rugged. Whether you’re heading to the provinces, tackling off-road trails, or arriving at an upscale event, the BT-50 seamlessly adapts to any scenario.
With its robust Japanese engineering, powerful and fuel-efficient engine, and distinctive design, the BT-50 is a compelling option. It blends the premium aesthetics and refinement characteristic of Mazda’s lineup with the durability and practicality expected of a pickup. If you’re looking for a truck that combines toughness with a touch of sophistication, the Mazda BT-50 deserves a place at the top of your list.
An upcoming facelift?

Remember when we mentioned earlier in the article that the Mazda BT-50 is nearing five years old? Well, its mid-cycle refresh, unveiled last year, brings a host of updates to look forward to and keeps the BT-50 feeling fresh and exciting.
For 2025, the Mazda BT-50 receives a bold visual update, integrating elements of the brand’s current iteration of the Kodo "Soul of Motion" design philosophy to align its appearance more closely with Mazda’s cars and SUVs. The most noticeable changes are at the front, featuring new LED headlights, a refreshed grille, and a redesigned bumper that incorporates an "air curtain" for improved fuel efficiency.

At the rear, the tailgate now boasts a ridged design, complemented by updated LED taillights. Both the front and rear prominently display the largest Mazda logos ever used, surpassing even those found on the latest CX series crossovers.
In addition to the aesthetic updates, the refreshed BT-50 will also welcome a new engine, Isuzu’s 2.20-liter Maxforce turbodiesel engine which will replace the 1.9-liter RZ4E-TC engine. Called the RZ4F-TC, this engine produces 160 hp at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. Paired with the new eight-speed Rev Tronic automatic transmission, the updated BT-50 is said to offer smoother gear changes and enhanced fuel efficiency, ensuring a more refined driving experience.
Mazda Philippines has not yet announced plans for the local launch of the refreshed BT-50, but hopefully, this updated model will arrive in 2025. In the meantime, if you’re looking for a pickup truck that’s equally capable on the job site and stylish enough for the high streets, the current BT-50 is more than up to the task.
