2019 Mazda3 with Skyactiv-X engine makes global debut

After several teasers, the Mazda3 finally makes global reveal. The compact car takes center stage at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, with a compelling “less is more” Kodo design, a handful of high-tech features, and an all-new Skyactiv-X engine that’s about to take the world by storm.

The all-new Mazda3 remains available in sedan and hatchback body types to suit its buyers’ preferences. What’s kind of odd, however, is that both body types have a lot of distinction from each other. In Mazda’s own words, “the development team took a fresh look at their respective values and personalities and then worked to maximize the unique appeal of each.”

The Mazda3 hatchback dons a more incorporated look with a seductive appeal. It appears as one solid mass from behind, encompassing a sultry styling that Mazda cars have been known for. A hatchback-exclusive Polymetal Gray is made available to match the hatch’s new styling. The 3 sedan, on the other hand, is sleeker and more elegant-looking than its hatchback counterpart, yet still seductive on its way.

What’s new on the Mazda3 is its narrower and sharper lighting configuration, front and back, reminiscent of what Mazda did with the Mazda CX-5. With sharper looks and lesser lighting figures (a.k.a. distractions) on the fascia, the aim is to have the eyes focus more on the main lighting elements, which I think works well in this case.

The “less is more” Kodo design language continues inside the car, with the minimalist approach paving way for a clean look. The instrument panel and climate controls are incorporated neatly into the dashboard, while the floating 8.8-inch infotainment display remains as the crown.

Head-up display is still standard on all Mazda3 trims, as well as genuine leather and fabric upholstery options with a choice between the dark theme and Greige (cool tones of gray with the soft feel of beige). Burgundy-colored interior theme is exclusively-available to the Mazda3 hatchback.

The 2019 Mazda3 comes in five engine types: 1.5-, 2.0-, and 2.5-liter versions of the latest Skyactiv-G comprise its gasoline engine lineup, while a 1.8-liter Skyactiv-D power plant represents the diesel option. And for the first time, the Skyactiv-X engine technology, which combines the gasoline and diesel combustion tech, will make its production car debut.

New driver-assistive features also make debut in the ‘3’. These new toys include Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS) system that adds traffic jam assist the ability to control the accelerator, brake, and steering, as well as front cross traffic alert that helps prevent collisions at blind intersections.

Global availability of the all-new Mazda3 Sedan and Hatchback remains unknown at this point, as well as the power figures of its several engine options. Keep your eyes peeled as we’ll surely give you an update once these bits of information are out.
