2019 Suzuki Jimny Philippines

The 2019 Suzuki Jimny is finally in the Philippines, and it isn’t just for show or some quick test drive like last year. Those who have been waiting for the small 4x4 SUV would be delighted to know that it’s now available for reservation, way ahead of its projected Q3 schedule.

The mini off-roader is one of the most popular nameplates in the world, so much so, that Suzuki Japan had issues keeping up with the global demand since its global launch in 2018. Be that as it may, Suzuki Philippines is able to deliver, understanding the inherent popularity of the cute and boxy SUV in the country.

The Philippine-spec Jimny doesn’t deviate from its global specifications. Standard across all variants are matte black wheel arch extensions and grille, 15-inch dark-metallic gray alloy wheels, fog lamps, and drip rails.

The only differences between the GL and range-topping GLX variants are the LED projector headlamps with manual leveler and washers, body color door handles, and black unpainted side mirrors that are found in the top-of-the-line trim. The contrasting roof color is also exclusive to the GLX variant.

By size, the fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny is, of course, bigger than its predecessor. It measures 3,650mm (143.7 in) from the front bumper to the spare tire cover while measuring 1,645mm (64.8 in) wide and 1,725mm (67.9 in) high. Wheelbase is retained at 2,250mm (88.6 in).

True to its off-roading roots, it has a 210mm ground clearance, as well as a 37-degree approach angle, 28-degree ramp break-over angle, and 49-degree departure angle. It also has a turning diameter of 9.8 meters.

It’s evident that the small SUV has gained more elbow room because of its wider body. I can attest to this as I’ve driven the mini SUV in a quick test drive last year. Seating capacity is still for four people, though.

In light of this, I’m happy to report that the Philippine-spec Jimny retained most of what was present during the test drive, including the 9-inch multimedia touchscreen infotainment system with USB, Bluetooth, aux-in, and Android MirrorLink connectivity.

Standard on both GL and GLX variants are fabric seats, power windows, central door locking, pollen filter, assist grips, chrome door handles, center console cupholder, 50:50 split rear seats, reverse parking sensor, and an off-line navigation system with SD card map. Of note, cargo space is at 85 liters but folding the rear seats would reveal a total volume of 377 liters.

The GLX top trim gets, of course, all the bells and whistles that are expected with its higher price. It comes with cruise control, Clinometer display for off-roading (pitching, rolling, compass, barometer, and altimeter), leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic air conditioning, and a reverse parking camera.

The all-new Suzuki Jimny is powered by the K15B four-cylinder 1.5-liter gasoline engine with a multi-point injection system. It has a maximum output of 101 hp at 6,000 RPM and 130 Nm torque at 4,000 RPM.

GL variants are available with either 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmissions while the GLX can be had in 4-speed automatic gearbox only. It also has Suzuki's new part-time 4WD system called All Grip Pro, allowing you to switch between rear-wheel drive and 4x4 as needed. Meanwhile, the front and rear suspension setup is a 3-link rigid axle with coil spring, while the front wheels get disc brakes and the rear has drum brakes.

As for safety and security, it has SRS dual front airbags, side impact door beams, ABS, ESC, hill hold and descent control, and immobilizer, while the GLX gets extra Brake Assist function. Moreover, the bonnet is also designed to absorb impact to mitigate pedestrian head and leg injuries in case of an accident.
