Remember that Toyota Corolla we wrote about a few months back? You know, the one with the sedan, hatch, and wagon version available for select markets? Those were already three pretty good reasons to want one, and it seems that Team Toyota GB wants you to have one more.
Entering the 2019 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship is the all-new Toyota Corolla by Team Toyota GB in collaboration with Speedworks Motorsport, and their driver is a two-time British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) Independent Champion Tom Ingram. Set to take to the track at the same time the production model hits British roads, this race-spec Toyota Corolla will be built at the Burnaston factory in Derbyshire.
Their entry into the 2019 season brings back the world’s best-selling nameplate and Team Toyota GB back to the BTCC. Both Toyota and the BTCC have a great history together, with a Corolla GT Coupe winning back-to-back championship titles in 1986-1987 with Chris Hodgetts behind the wheel. Speedworks Motorsport has been in BTCC since 2011, competing as an independent, and the new partnership with Team Toyota GB shows their efforts to step up to manufacturer-supported teams. The Speedworks Motorsport team has a reputation of being giant-killers in the BTCC, and their driver, Tom Ingram is equally capable, posting nine victories and top performances, securing both the Independent Team and Driver trophies in 2017 and 2018.
“We have been establishing an ever-closer relationship with Toyota GB for the past few years, nurturing that bond through our common passion for motorsport, engineering excellence and, ultimately, success. Our new relationship with them will enable us to take that final step and really push for the overall BTCC title. As a team, we are ready to pitch ourselves against the very best in Britain and, with Toyota GB’s backing, we are confident of doing just that.
Tom Ingram is 25 years old and is touted as one of the undisputed rising stars of the race series. He’s been with the Speedworks Motorsport team since his championship debut in 2014, and he aims to take home another trophy with the new Toyota Corolla this coming season. The first race date for the new Corolla will be the opening round of the 2019 season at Brands Hatch on 6-7 April, so if you want to see some track action of Toyota’s latest hatchback, then this is as good as it gets.
