The French manufacturer, Peugeot which is better known for its cars and MPVs, has tried something new, coming out with a new pickup to add to its lineup. While the brand isn't known to be a major player in the segment it recently unveiled its all-new 2020 Landtrek pickup truck.
The brand has dabbled in the past with reputable pickup trucks over the years such as the 404 and 504, and the 207 based Hoggar which was launched in Africa three years ago.
The company is doubling down on truck efforts with the launch of the more upscale model, the Landtrek one-ton pickup truck. The vehicle is aimed at markets such as Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Landtrek comes from a Chinese and French collaboration. Peugeot paired up with Changan for this project. The pickup is based on a newly developed platform that the Landtrek shares with its Chinese brother the Changan Kaichen F70. The Chinese-made pickup made its debut a year ahead of its French brother.
The all-new pickup comes available in three body styles. The first is a single cab, the second is a double cab, and the third is a chassis and cab. The French pickup truck can be had with a 4x2 or a 4x4 drivetrain. An interesting feature to note is the vehicle’s engine. It comes with a 1.9-liter turbo diesel that is capable of producing 150hp and 350 Nm of torque or a 2.4-liter turbo-diesel powerplant that produces 210hp and 320 Nm of torque. Power travels to the wheels via a 6-speed manual or 6-speed Punch automatic transmission. It is interesting to note that the smaller 1.9-liter powerplant makes more torque than the 2.4-liter.
Peugeot Philippines currently does not have a truck in its line up just yet. Perhaps the Landtrek could make a good contender for the segment that we have in the country.
