Toyota has just lifted the covers off of its latest lineup to the Corolla family, the Corolla Sedan. Shown off at a world premiere at the 2018 Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition, the new sedan models mean that the Corolla nameplate has come full circle, with the hatchback and wagon debuting earlier this 2018.
Still utilizing the GA-C platform, the Corolla Sedan will be offered in Sporty and Prestige trims, each with their own set of design touches depending on the market they will be sold in. The Sporty edition will be sold under the Levin name in China, North America, and Japan, while the Prestige model will be offered in China under the Corolla name and Europe. More countries will get the Corolla Sedan in the coming months, as Toyota has yet to announce the full list, but they do expect the new models to be rolled out in more than 150 countries by mid-2019.
Based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), the 12th generation GA-C platform has been unified globally. The new platform offers improved driving performance, comfort, and safety. Shooting Robust is the name of the exterior design concept, creating a sporty silhouette and lower stance. The interior follows a flowing yet minimalist design, with a sleek instrument panel and convenient button layout. Infotainment and connectivity functions will also vary per market, with China getting Toyota Connected services, the United States getting Amazon Alexa and Apple CarPlay, and Europe having the direct connection to emergency services in case of an accident. These features can change in time, however, as the new model is distributed and specced around the world.
Various regions will get their own set of engines, which can range from a 2.0L mated to a manual or CVT, or hybrid models that feature the latest in Toyota’s advancements in electrified vehicles. Toyota Safety Sense is available for the Corolla Sedan, with options to tailor fit the packages for specific markets.
The Corolla is Toyota’s all-time best-selling car model, hitting 46 million cars sold worldwide since 1966. Expect sales of the new 2019 Corolla Sedan to start in the United States and Europe by spring 2019, China after the second half of 2020, and Japan to get them sometime within the same year. Could the Philippines get an allocation? We certainly hope so.
