A few days ago, the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asia, otherwise known as the ASEAN NCAP, released its detailed report on the safety of the 2023 Toyota Vios. Before we get confused though, the Vios we’re talking about is the latest generation called the AC100.
Historically, the Vios was one of the first models tested by the ASEAN NCAP since it started back in 2011. In fact, it was one of the eight models first tested under the ASEAN NCAP’s phase 1 assessment program. The second-generation Vios, named the XP90, earned a respectable four out of five stars on the test. Subsequently, the ASEAN NCAP conducted a second evaluation of the sedan, specifically the 2018 model, following the assessment protocol in place from 2017 to 2020.
In this assessment, the 2018 XP150 Vios netted an impressive five-star rating, achieving an overall score of 18.41 points, which was derived from the combined results of the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP), and Safety Assist (SA) assessment categories.
The AC100 was tested using the much more thorough 2021-2025 protocol and like the XP150 generation it replaces, the AC100 achieved a five-star safety rating in the ASEAN NCAP assessment. In this recent evaluation, the AC100 Vios garnered an impressive total score of 78.70 points. Specifically, it excelled in various categories, with 35.25 points in the AOP category, 16.64 points in the COP category, 16.08 points in the SA category, and 10.73 points for its performance in the Motorcyclist Safety (MS) assessment category.
According to the people over at the ASEAN NCAP, the new Toyota Vios comes equipped with six airbags as a standard feature in the majority of its markets, with one exception where only two airbags are offered. Across all its variants, this sedan sports essential safety features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Seatbelt Reminder System (SBR) for both front and rear seat occupants, and Pedestrian Protection technology as standard.
Furthermore, the new Vios offers a range of safety assist technologies, available either as standard features or optional equipment. These include Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) City, AEB Inter-Urban, AEB Pedestrian, Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD) on both sides of the vehicle, and Auto High Beam (AHB).
All in all, pretty impressive considering that the Vios is considered an entry-level car in the market. Don’t let that stop you from getting into the older XP150 though, as while it is getting on a bit in age, it’s still a five-star safety rating holder in the ASEAN NCAP program.
