It looks like BYD is keeping the momentum going, as it might be preparing to launch another plug-in hybrid in the Philippines. After introducing the Sealion 5 as its smaller PHEV crossover, the brand now seems to be working on a bigger model for families.
As reported by AutoIndustriya, the Department of Energy (DOE) recently updated its list of recognized plug-in hybrids in the country. On that list is a model called the BYD eMAX 9, which looks very similar to the BYD Xia sold in China. This isn’t the first time a similar MPV appeared on the list. In the past, a version called the Denza D9 was also mentioned.
This could mean BYD’s local distributor ACMobility is planning to bring in the eMAX 9 under the main BYD lineup. At the same time, BYD is also working on introducing the Denza brand separately in the country sometime later this year.
To make it clearer, you can think of the eMAX 9 as BYD’s version of the Toyota Alphard, while the Denza D9 is closer to the Lexus LM. Both are luxury-style MPVs, but they target different price levels.
In China, the Denza D9 is offered in two versions: full electric and plug-in hybrid. Based on the document, it looks like the version coming to the Philippines will be the plug-in hybrid variant, or DM-i as BYD calls it. This model pairs a 1.5-liter turbo engine with an electric motor that produces around 228 hp. If it follows BYD’s usual setup, it may offer up to 100 km of electric-only driving, and up to 1,000 km of total range on a full tank and charge.
As for the eMAX 9, it’s also a plug-in hybrid. Based on the DOE data, it runs on a single electric motor that makes around 268 hp and 315 Nm of torque. There are two battery options listed. One is a 20.4 kWh battery for the Advanced model, and the other is a 36.6 kWh battery for the Premium version, which should offer a longer electric-only range. The eMAX 9 also supports Type 2 AC charging and CCS DC fast charging.
If BYD prices it well, the eMAX 9 could be a great option for people who want a roomy and fuel-efficient MPV. In the meantime, you can explore other BYD models or check out the GAC M8 on AutoDeal.com.ph.
