Ford's push towards electrifying its vehicle line-up is well-documented. The company has stated its intentions to electrify 40 percent of its vehicles by the end of the decade. Starting with the Mustang Mach-E and the F150 Lightning, the American automaker looks determined to bring its brand to the forefront of the industry's future.
That said, we have word on when the Blue Oval's newest EV could hit showroom floors. A fully electric version of the Ford Explorer crossover was promised last May, but no release date has been officially revealed.
Now, according to Automotive News, we may not have to wait much longer. The Explorer EV is expected to begin production sometime in 2023. The vehicle will reportedly be manufactured at Ford's Cuautitlan Assembly Plant in Mexico. This location is also where the Mustang Mach-E is produced, so there's no shortage of high hopes in terms of quality.
Since debuting in 1991, the Explorer has been one of Ford's best-selling and most successful models. The crossover is in its sixth generation, but the new electric model will likely deviate in design and performance from its gas-powered family.
Ford hasn't released performance figures for the new Explorer EV, not even teaser photos. Not to worry, though, as we fully expect Ford to start its marketing campaign as we inch closer to the rumored 2023 release date.
For now, fans of Ford will have to settle for the local, current-spec Explorer. The mid-size crossover is available in two engine configurations. The first is a 4-cylinder 2.3-liter EcoBoost gasoline power plant, while a 3.5-liter V6 mill is an option. Both engines connect to a 6-speed SelectShift Automatic gearbox.
In terms of features, Ford has equipped the Explorer with some premium selections like an 8-inch Sony Premium Audio infotainment system with 12 speakers, active park assist, a sunroof, and a power tailgate. The 2021 Ford Explorer available locally starts at P2,798,000.
