Originally debuting back in September 2020 in China, the all-new MG 5 made waves in the automotive scene thanks to its stylish and sporty new design. While there were no reports at the time that the all-new sedan would go on sale in other countries, new reports have come in that the model is now slated for a launch in Thailand. No specific dates were mentioned yet, however, the reports did state that it would make its debut in the middle of 2021. This could point to a June to August launch window. With the all-new MG 5 set to launch in Thailand soon, this could bring it one step closer to the Philippine market.
As for its specifications, the all-new MG 5 is still expected to carry the same 1.5-liter gasoline motor along with the CVT that was in the previous generation. It is important to remember that there is a 1.5-liter turbo model available in other countries, however, it has yet to be confirmed for Thailand. That being said, we expect to see more features added to the vehicle in its latest iteration. A few things to note when it comes to the all-new vehicle is that it is 63mm longer, 38mm wider, and 8mm shorter than that of its previous generation. This means that there should be a significant increase in space for the passengers inside the vehicle making it all the more attractive to buyers. That said, its wheelbase has also been increased making the new model now 30mm longer than its predecessor.
The current generation of the MG 5 available in the Philippines is a rebadged Roewe i5. While Roewe and MG are sister companies, the former doesn’t have as much equity as its partner. This means that a facelifted model entering the Philippine market could be a likely scenario instead of the all-new model. With that said, all we can do now is wait for further announcements from MG Philippines to see what their plans are for the affordable and feature-packed sedan in the country.
