2026 Toyota Hilux

The much-awaited reveal has finally happened: the ninth-generation Hilux has been unveiled in Thailand today. The things you’d expect when a new generation for a nameplate is all here: a fresh new look, an upgraded interior, and an upgraded engine. On that last note, the Toyota Hilux may have more in store for us.

Before we discuss the new powertrains, let’s take a look at the exterior first. Up front, the new Hilux is sleeker and sharper than the preceding generation, featuring thin headlights and a slimmer, simpler grille with the word “Toyota” embossed above. Below the headlights, black trim pieces on both ends of the bumper give the pickup’s face extra contouring and an overall more aggressive look. Hilux models with internal combustion engines feature a black mesh grille, while battery-electric (BEV) versions — yes, you read that right — get body-colored ones instead.

Inside, the Hilux features a modern interior with a touch of toughness. The dashboard, which manages to look simple and robust at the same features new tech in the way of an electronic parking brake with auto hold, a wireless charger, a large digital instrument cluster, and a free-standing infotainment touchscreen. Depending on the trim level, the instrument cluster and infotainment screen can go up to 12.3 inches in size.

Pop the hood, and it gets even better. Powering the new Hilux is an improved 2.8-liter GD “Super Power” diesel engine. According to Toyota, it pushes out 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque while sipping less fuel than before, up to 5.8 percent more efficient than the smaller 2GD 2.4-liter turbo-diesel and 7.5 percent better than the current 2.8 1GD, thanks in part to its idle start-stop system.

The upgrades don’t stop there. The Hilux now features electric power steering and four-wheel disc brakes, supported by a stiffer chassis and retuned suspension. Together, these refinements translate to a smoother, more confident drive on- or off-road. Drivers can also take advantage of the new Multi-Terrain Select system, which offers five modes for various surfaces.

The new powertrains we mentioned before refer to the all-electric Hilux Travo-e. A full-on battery-electric pickup truck. A 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery feeds the dual-motor setup, generating 205 Nm of torque up front and 268.6 Nm at the rear for a combined 193 hp. Toyota claims a range of over 315 km with the Travo-e supporting both AC and DC charging.

As for size, the new Hilux stretches 5,320 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, and 1,800 mm tall, riding on a 3,085 mm wheelbase. On the safety front, Toyota equips it with the full Safety Sense 3.0 package, which means it has adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. It also gets a Multi-Terrain Monitor for added confidence when the pavement ends.

If you’re wondering, this isn’t the end of the road for the Hilux we have today. The eighth-generation model will continue to be sold alongside the new ninth-generation Hilux in Thailand. As for the Philippines, we can expect the next-generation pickup to make its debut in 2026, hopefully sooner rather than later.
