BYD launches 2026 Seagull with optional LiDar and 405 km of driving range

BYD’s tiny hatchback is available with the optional “God’s Eye B” LiDar package in China.

A few days ago, BYD has just launched the 2026 Seagull, featuring updates covering range, interior creature comforts, and an optional LiDar powered driver assistance system. In addition, the 2026 Seagull also gets a slightly updated front fascia, and a new colorway, ensuring that BYD’s peppy EV remains youthful.

Starting with range, the updated Seagull can now get 405 km of range, achievable on higher-spec variants equipped with a new 38.88 kWh battery pack. Base models keep the outgoing 30.08 kWh unit, which still delivers a respectable 305 km. Power figures remain the same. Work is still done by a single front-mounted electric motor putting out 73 hp and 135 Nm of torque, but at the Seagull’s compact size, that’s more than enough.

Visually, the 2026 Seagull doesn't stray far from what came before, and aside from a slightly sharpened up front fascia, BYD kept the design largely the same as before. What does change is the color palette, which now includes Mango Orange and Mint Green alongside existing options. These aren't subtle shades, and they suit the Seagull's character well. New 16-inch alloy wheels and revised LED taillights round out the exterior updates.

Perhaps the most eyebrow-raising addition is the optional "God's Eye B" driver assistance system, marketed under BYD's DiPilot 300 banner. That little pod sitting on the Seagull's roof is not an aftermarket roof scoop but a LiDAR sensor, and it unlocks some genuinely useful features: City Navigation on Autopilot (CNOA), traffic light recognition, and the ability to handle roundabouts autonomously. For a car in this segment, that's not something you see every day.

Inside, the biggest change is the new electronic column-mounted shifter, replacing the toggle-style gear selector located in the center stack . It looks cleaner and trades the rather gimmicky approach of the old gear selector for a more practical one. The touchscreen grows to 12.8 inches and now supports 3D vehicle control, complemented by the addition of a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a 50W wireless charger, and heated front seats.

Here in the Philippines, the Seagull along with other compact EVs are seeing a rise in popularity. Will that be enough for BYD Philippines to expedite a local launch of the updated Seagull here? We sure hope so.
