Whenever EVs are discussed, one common concern inevitably comes up: recharging times. While DC fast chargers have reduced charging times to around 30 to 45 minutes for a 30 percent to 80 percent charge, that’s still a significant wait. In contrast, refueling a gas-powered car takes just 5 to 10 minutes, making the difference hard to ignore.
BYD seems to have come up with an answer, as it has recently introduced its megawatt flash charger charging stations, designed for passenger electric vehicles with a 1000V high-voltage system. These stations can deliver 400 km of range in just five minutes with their 10C charge rate. BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu announced plans to install more than 4,000 megawatt charging stations across China.
This was showcased when BYD charged the new Han L EV and Tang L EV from 7 percent to 50 percent in just 4.5 minutes. Both models feature a 1000V high-voltage platform and a lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack equipped with a 1500V silicon-carbide power module, enabling efficient battery discharge. BYD says this new architecture will serve as the foundation for its Super e-Platform, designed for vehicles with 10C charging capability. This means the battery can be recharged up to 10 times per hour.
In addition, BYD has unveiled its latest electric motor technology for future EV models, featuring e-motors capable of spinning at over 30,000 rpm—the highest of any production vehicle.
These advanced motors will deliver an impressive 580 kW of power with a power density of 16.4 kW/kg.
They will also incorporate new silicon carbide power chips, ensuring they can efficiently handle the high voltages and currents of this next-generation platform.
These advancements in EV technology are undoubtedly exciting, especially if they bring EV ownership closer to the convenience of gas-powered cars. But will these ultra-fast charging stations reach the Philippines? Hopefully, as EV adoption continues to grow, we’ll see them arrive in the country before long.
