The BYD Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid crossover has earned the top five-star ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) safety rating under the latest, more stringent 2023 standards, which will remain in effect through 2025. The Sealion 6 is the latest BYD vehicle to achieve a five-star crash test rating from the ANCAP, following the Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal sedan.
According to ANCAP, this rating is based on the Euro NCAP test results for the all-electric Seal U sold in Europe, with additional frontal offset and oblique pole tests performed by Euro NCAP on the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid to confirm its safety performance.
Moving to the test itself, the Sealion 6 earned full marks for protecting critical body regions in the frontal offset test, matching the performance of its electric counterpart, except for the driver's lower legs, which were rated as 'adequate.'
'Adequate' ratings were also given for the driver's chest in both the full-width frontal and oblique pole tests, while all other areas were found to provide good protection for the driver and other occupants. The ANCAP also noted that if Sealion 6 encounters water, the doors of the vehicle will remain operational for the minimum required duration. Additionally, an escape hammer is included to facilitate exit through the windows.
The Sealion 6's autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system was rated 'good' for detecting vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. However, its reverse AEB function received a 'marginal' score.
Overall, the BYD Sealion 6 achieved scores of 88 percent for adult occupant protection, 86 percent for child occupant protection, 83 percent for vulnerable road user protection, and 75 percent for safety assistance. To receive a five-star rating under the latest ANCAP standards, minimum scores of 80 percent, 80 percent, 70 percent, and 70 percent are required, respectively.
While the BYD has yet to be tested by the ASEAN NCAP, the five-star safety rating it received from the ANCAP should provide owners and prospective buyers alike with additional assurance that their car is one of the safest on the road.
