BYD has unveiled a new 2.0-liter boxer engine, marking an unexpected move for the Chinese automaker best known for its electric vehicle lineup. The flat-four engine will be used not as a traditional power source, but as a range extender to recharge the batteries of upcoming BYD electric models.
The new setup is part of BYD’s next step in developing its DM-i electrified powertrain technology. This system combines electric and gasoline motors to achieve lower fuel consumption and extended driving ranges, reaching up to 1,000 kilometers on a full tank and charge. With this latest addition, BYD aims to improve both range and performance while maintaining efficiency.
The use of a boxer engine might sound surprising for a company known for clean energy vehicles, but BYD said the layout offers several benefits. Compared to a traditional inline engine, the flat configuration lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity and improves driving balance. It also helps make the car smoother and quieter on the road.
The boxer engine uses a dry-sump lubrication system to keep it compact and reduce noise. BYD also developed a special oil-circulation setup and a cooling system designed specifically for the opposed-cylinder design. The company claims that at idle or under light loads, the engine is just one decibel louder than an electric motor, making it nearly silent in operation.
BYD’s new boxer engine signals an interesting mix of old and new technology, merging classic engineering with modern electric systems. It’s another example of how automakers are exploring creative ways to extend range and efficiency in the next generation of hybrid and electric vehicles.
If BYD ever brings this new boxer engine setup to the Philippines, it could make range-extender EVs more appealing to local drivers who still worry about charging access and distance. With its quiet operation and long range, it could fit well with city commutes and out-of-town drives alike. It might even set a new standard for smooth, fuel-efficient hybrids in the local market. In the meantime, you can check out BYD’s current lineup of electric vehicles at AutoDeal.com.ph
