The Department of Transport (DOTr) fast tracks the Cebu Bus Rapid Transport (BRT). The government agency even announced that they’ve been working overtime just to complete the transport system. They even added that construction is aimed to start this April while partial opening is targeted before the end of 2021.
The new infrastructure is set to reduce the traffic congestion within the City. DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade delivered a progress report regarding the BRT. In order to catch up with its target date, he affirmed that the procurement process for the project will start soon, plus, they are also aiming to start its construction by April 2021. This plan also goes in accordance with traffic-alleviating strategies planned by DOTr for Visayas' busiest metropolis.
We need to improve and modernize the public transport system of Cebu City and the Province of Cebu and in various places in Region 7.
Apart from that, the DOTr Secretary also challenged local officials to form the Metro Cebu Traffic Authority and manage congestion, plus, they should also formulate notable solutions for the city as well. As per the government agency, the projected cost of this project is P16.5 billion. The new bus line is targeted to be opened before the end of this year.
Going further, the DOTr also has plans for two monorail systems. Specifically, the Cebu Central Line, which stretches by about 17.7 km. Second, is the Cebu Airport Line which runs by about 9.3 km. Lastly, a proposed cable car will also serve those coming from the hinterland villages in the city. Perhaps, these proposals will soon become a reality in the near future. Notably, in just a few months, the residents from Metro Cebu will soon experience its new and modernized BRT, which should provide them a more convenient commute along with reduced traffic congestion.
