Back in April, Chevrolet confirmed the existence of an upcoming C8 Corvette ZR1 through a quick 21-second teaser video. Now, Chevrolet has provided another quick teaser video but this time, it gives us a little bit more insight into what’s powering the hardcore Vette.
Through the teaser, fans were given a clue as to the ZR1’s powertrain through its sound. For us, and we’re sure as is the case for many who watched the teaser, the engine note sounds like a Chevy flat-plane crank V8 with the noticeable whistle of a turbocharger.
Since the first teaser came out, speculation has been circulating that the new ZR1 will feature a turbocharged V8, but with this latest teaser, we can place our bets on the turbocharged theory with more confidence. The ZR1 has dominated the Corvette lineup for three consecutive generations, so expect it to put up big numbers, especially now that we know it will have a turbocharger. The previous C7 ZR1 boasted 755 hp so we can expect the upcoming C8 ZR1 to push way past that.
On the other hand, the engine that will be fitted with a turbo is likely the LT6 from the C8 Corvette Z06. The LT6 is a naturally aspirated flat-plane crank V8 which allows it to rev high and produce linear power. This engine produces an impressive 670 horsepower and 624 Nm of torque, making it one of the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engines ever produced. If Chevy bolts on two turbochargers to this screaming V8, who knows how much more power it will make?
Thankfully, it won’t be long before we know the full details from Chevrolet themselves since we’re fast approaching the reveal date for the C8 Corvette ZR1.
