They say rumors aren’t always true, and in the case of the CX-5, that’s only partly right. Two years ago, some thought the model was being phased out, but reports at the time also said Mazda was working on a third-generation CX-5 set for a 2025 release. After all the back-and-forth talk about a possible goodbye or an upgrade, Mazda has now revealed the answer: a new generation for 2026.
In 2023, reports claimed that Mazda was working on a new version of the CX-5, despite many thinking it would soon be replaced by models like the CX-50 and CX-90. Sources back then shared that Mazda had plans for a new CX-5 that would keep a familiar setup but add new technology, including a hybrid powertrain. Now, the 2026 model has finally been shown, and it matches most of what insiders predicted.
The new CX-5 keeps the same name but is built from scratch. It now rides on a longer wheelbase, making it about 4689 mm long in total. This puts it nearly the same size as popular rivals like the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue. That added length makes the second-row space roomier than before, and the trunk is now easier to load, thanks to a wider and lower opening with a bit more space inside.
Mazda also gave it a fresh look, using an updated version of their Kodo design. The front has stacked LED lights, a sharper "Wing" grille, and a wider bumper. The back now shows off a clean “MAZDA” word badge and new tail lights that look similar to what’s on the CX-70. Sporty 19-inch wheels are also available on higher trims.
Inside, Mazda moved away from buttons and gave the dashboard a more minimal layout. While the full list of features isn’t out yet, we can expect a more modern setup similar to other new Mazda crossovers. And yes, a hybrid version is on the way, though it won’t be available right away. Mazda says it’s developing the hybrid system in-house, which lines up with what was said back in 2023.
There’s no word yet if this new CX-5 is coming to the Philippines, but given how popular the current model is, it’s not impossible. Local buyers have also started getting used to Mazda’s newer crossovers like the CX-60, and a hybrid CX-5 might just fit in perfectly.
Besides, there’s still a lot to look forward to, especially now that the hybrid version is confirmed. While we wait for it to arrive, feel free to explore the current CX-5 and the rest of Mazda’s lineup at AutoDeal.com.ph.
