Cars that excel as daily drivers need the right blend of characteristics and features to truly stand out. Back in the day, a vehicle assigned to daily driving duties simply had to take you from point A to point B, with little regard for comfort or convenience. Fast forward to today, and the modern daily driver is expected to be a well-rounded machine, more than just a basic mode of transportation; it now has to have modern conveniences and a reasonable amount of refinement as well.
Enter the GAC AION ES. Not only does it tick the box when it comes to reducing fuel costs, thanks to its all-electric setup, but it also offers a number of standout interior features that make it a compelling choice for everyday use. Without further ado, let’s dive into those five features.
A gas-free way to move
As we mentioned earlier, the GAC AION ES is a battery electric car. Specifically, it’s a battery electric compact sedan. Powering it is a single 100 kW electric motor producing 134 hp and 225 Nm of torque delivered to the front wheels. This motor sources its power from a 55.2 kWh battery that gives it a claimed range of up to 442 km on the WLTC cycle.
It may not sound like much, but for city dwellers, 442 km is more than enough to get them through the week on a single charge. In addition, the ES is capable of both DC and AC charging, so if you’re ever in need of a quick charge-up, a DC charger can juice up the batteries from 20 to 80 percent in around 30 to 40 minutes.
Space age propulsion, old-school charm
Despite the ES’s space-age approach to mobility, the interior remains intuitive and easy to understand. Many drivers, ourselves included, will appreciate the inclusion of physical buttons on the dashboard for the climate controls, kept separate from the infotainment system. Another refreshingly old-school touch is the ES’s analogue gauges—while some may prefer digital displays, their presence in an EV carries a charm all its own.
Across the rest of the dashboard, everything sits exactly where you expect it to be. From the turn signals and shifter to the electronic parking brake, the familiar layout means that even drivers stepping into the ES from an older car can get settled and going within moments.
Furthermore, the AION ES features a decent amount of driver aids and convenience features like hill-hold control, a reverse camera and sensors, and an electronic tailgate, among others, that make day-to-day driving much easier.
A comfortably roomy interior
Inside the ES is a roomy cabin with enough space to comfortably seat five passengers. While the sedan segment isn’t exactly known for generous interior space, the ES has a few aces up its sleeve when it comes to making the most of what’s available.
The cabin feels open and airy, offering generous headroom of up to 980 mm, allowing both the driver and passengers to settle in without feeling constrained. The seats are shaped with ergonomics in mind, providing supportive cushioning that works just as well for short city runs as it does for longer commutes.
Rear passengers enjoy the same sense of roominess, with ample legroom and a well-laid-out seating area that avoids the cramped feel common in compact sedans, helped by a flat floor and a higher-than-average ceiling. This thoughtful use of space extends beyond the passenger compartment and into the cargo hold.
Generous amounts of cargo space
At 450 litres of cargo capacity, the ES’ trunk lives between everyday usability and segment‑competitive utility. That’s ample room for a couple of large suitcases or a week’s worth of groceries without awkward stacking or tight fits, making it well‑suited to family duties, airport runs, or even bulky weekend gear.
Sleek and discreet
Another charm of the ES that makes it a great daily driver is its sleek but discreet design. Rather than chasing excessive flair, the ES leans into clean proportions, a tidy overall shape, sharp headlamps, and restrained body lines that give it a distinct presence on the road. It stands out just enough to be noticed, yet remains understated, avoiding the kind of gaudiness or visual noise that can quickly wear thin in everyday use.
This approach to design works especially well for a car meant to be driven day in and day out. The ES projects a sense of quiet confidence, with styling that feels thoughtful and intentional rather than attention-seeking.
