The much-revered Bronco is going electric? Yes, it is, but it’s exclusive only to the Chinese market. Revealed on China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) website, what you’re looking at is the new Ford Bronco New Energy.
Exclusive to the Chinese market, the Bronco New Energy is a product of Ford's collaboration with Jiangling Motors (JMC). It stands apart from both the standard Bronco and the Bronco Sport, featuring a noticeably longer and wider body while blending design elements from both models. The front fascia leans more toward the Bronco Sport’s styling, while the rear adopts the full-size Bronco’s signature spare tire mount.
Unlike the Bronco, the New Energy version doesn’t appear to support an open-roof setup; this version has a conventional fixed roof and a substantial 5,025 mm length, which allows room for a third-row seat.
The all-electric variant is powered by a 105.4 kWh battery delivering 271 hp and offering a range of up to 650 km under China’s CLTC cycle. An extended-range plug-in hybrid version is also available, pairing a 1.5-liter engine with a 43.7-kWh battery for a combined 241 hp and an EV-only range of 220 km.
For comparison, the gas-powered Bronco has three powertrains to choose from. First is a 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four that delivers 300 hp in its base configuration, followed by a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 that puts out 330 hp and a more powerful twin-turbo V6 that cranks out 418 hp in the high-performance Raptor variant. The smaller Bronco Sport crossover, on the other hand, comes with either a 1.5-liter three-cylinder or 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 181 hp and 245 hp, respectively.
While the Bronco New Energy is a China-exclusive model, it offers an intriguing glimpse into the possible future of the Bronco lineup. For those eager to experience the Bronco at its most rugged and adventurous, be sure to explore the Ford Bronco Car Guide on AutoDeal.com.ph.
