Ford’s new Universal EV Platform hints at an upcoming midsize EV pickup truck

Lose the thought that electric vehicles can’t be exciting because this one is aiming for Mustang-like speed and RAV4-beating space. Ford is developing a midsize electric pickup using its new Ford Universal Electric Vehicle Platform (FUEVP) and plans to build it in Louisville, Kentucky. The model is set to debut in 2027 with a starting price of around $30,000 USD, which is about P1.71 million. With the Philippines currently applying a zero percent tariff on US-made vehicles, the pickup could enter the market at a competitive price if this policy is still in place by launch time.

The new platform is made to make production faster and more efficient. Ford shared that it will reduce parts by 20 percent, cut fasteners by 25 percent, and use fewer workstations in the assembly process. It will feature lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic batteries that are cobalt- and nickel-free. These lighter batteries save space, serve as the vehicle’s structural floor, improve handling, and add more cabin room.

Ford expects the pickup to have more passenger space than the latest Toyota RAV4, plus a front trunk and a secure bed for gear. Performance-wise, it’s targeted to match the Mustang EcoBoost with a 0-100 km/h time of under five seconds. Engineers aimed to keep it practical while also making it fun to drive.

The new Ford Universal EV Production System will also change how the pickup is built. Instead of a single assembly line, the process will use three lines for the front, rear, and battery sections before joining them together. This method, along with large single-piece aluminum castings, could speed up production by as much as 40% compared to current Louisville plant vehicles.

Ford hasn’t confirmed if this electric pickup will carry the Ranger name or slot as a smaller sibling to the F-150 Lightning. The company also hinted that this platform could be used for future electric vans, SUVs, and updates to the E-Transit and F-150 Lightning.
