GWM Cannon PHEV

GWM is cooking something up in China with the Cannon, and thanks to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), we know what it is.

According to data found in the latest catalog from China’s MIIT, the GWM Cannon is about to get an electrified powertrain. The reason we say electrified instead of electric is that this Cannon is getting a 2.0-liter PHEV powertrain, which develops 248 hp. As for the battery pack for the system, the PHEV Cannon will feature lithium iron phosphate or LFP batteries. What’s still unknown, however, is the capacity of said batteries.

As for the looks, the hybrid Cannon doesn’t differ much from its internal-combustion engine counterparts, aside from a different polygonal grille. Aside from a roll bar at the bed and what appears to be hooks by the outside bed panel, the hybrid Cannon’s exterior is mostly bare, with no features like a roof rail or step board to note. The hybrid Cannon’s design also follows the current design of the Pilot variant we have here in the Philippines, hence the different front fascia. In terms of size, the GWM Cannon PHEV measures 5,653 mm, 1,883 mm in width, and 1,882 mm in height with a wheelbase that’s 3,470 mm long. Meanwhile, the cargo bed has internal dimensions of 1,760 mm in length, 1,520mm in width, and 540 mm in height.

GWM Cannon PHEV Tailgate

Right now, the Cannon is available here in the Philippines with a choice of two diesel engines. First is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 159 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The next option is a larger 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 181 hp and 480 Nm of torque.

Once the PHEV Cannon makes its official debut, it will go up against the likes of the BYD Shark 6, the Changan Hunter EREV, and the Ford Ranger PHEV. If it makes its way to the Philippine market, it could shake up an already competitive mid-size pickup segment—one that’s also beginning to feel pressure from full-electric pickup trucks from Dongfeng and Radar.
