Hyundai Motor Company and Shell Lubricants are extending their long-running partnership, with both companies set to work together through 2031 on technologies and initiatives aimed at the future of mobility.
The two companies recently renewed their five-year Global Business Cooperation Agreement, continuing a relationship that dates back to 2005. The latest agreement expands their focus beyond aftersales and lubricants, with joint research and development, service marketing, and motorsports now forming key parts of the collaboration.
Hyundai says the partnership will continue to support its global aftersales operations, including the use of Shell's premium engine oils for Hyundai customers. The companies will also explore new opportunities as the automotive industry shifts toward electrification and other next-generation technologies.
"Through our collaborative aftersales service marketing initiatives over the past years, we have successfully enhanced our global aftersales service competitiveness and improved customer satisfaction by delivering Shell's premium quality engine oils to Hyundai customers worldwide," said Beom Seok Kang, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Service Sub-Division at Hyundai Motor Company.
Research and development will be another major focus of the renewed agreement. Hyundai and Shell plan to work on improving engine oil technology while also developing fluids and coolants designed specifically for electric vehicles. Their wider collaboration will cover areas such as e-fluids, thermal management, and digital technologies.
Shell says lessons learned through motorsports will also continue to feed into the development of products for road-going vehicles. The company has worked with Hyundai and its brands for more than two decades, with the partnership now expanding into technologies suited to electrified and high-performance vehicles.
Motorsports is already playing a role in the latest phase of the partnership. Shell has expanded its collaboration with Genesis, Hyundai Motor Group's luxury marque, and is serving as a performance and innovation partner for Genesis Magma Racing during its debut season in the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship.
As part of that program, Shell supplies specialized lubricants and coolants for the Genesis Magma Racing GMR-001 Hypercar. The partnership also extends to Hyundai N, where the two companies are working on lubricants for high-performance engines and electric vehicles.
For Shell, the motorsports program provides a real-world environment for testing new technologies before potentially applying the lessons to future products. For Hyundai, the expanded agreement gives the automaker another avenue to develop technologies as its lineup continues to evolve beyond traditional combustion-powered vehicles.
With the agreement now running through 2031, Hyundai and Shell are positioning their partnership around a broader mix of electrification, performance, aftersales support, and technology development.
