On Hyundai Motor Philippines’ official Facebook page, a surprise teaser image featuring a green vehicle hints at a new model coming to the local market. Although the image doesn’t provide much information about the upcoming mystery vehicle, we have an idea of what it might be, and the green paint is a big hint.
Back in 2018, a Hyundai car with the same kind of bright green paint was also offered in the Philippines, the Kona. Although the market was receptive to Hyundai’s sporty subcompact crossover, the Creta took its place in 2022. Another reason we think it might be the Kona, aside from the paint, is that Hyundai has recently been reviving discontinued nameplates like the Elantra and possibly the Accent. With that in mind, it’s not hard to see why the Kona could be next in line.

Suppose the car in the teaser is the Kona, the next question would be: What kind of powertrain are we getting? In that regard, Hyundai has plenty to choose from. Engine options start with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated MPi petrol engine, delivering 147 hp and 179 Nm of torque, followed by a turbocharged 1.0-liter engine that produces 118 hp and 200 Nm, paired with a seven-speed DCT. Rounding out the pure gasoline powertrains is a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine that delivers 195 hp and 265 Nm of torque.
On the electrified side, there's a hybrid variant that combines a 1.6-liter GDI petrol engine with an electric motor and a 1.32 kWh battery, producing a combined output of 139 hp. Additionally, there’s a fully electric model called the Kona Electric, available in two configurations: a Standard Range model with a 48.4 kWh battery and a Long Range version with a 65.4 kWh battery, both powering a front-mounted electric motor.

Now, considering that we already have the Creta, the Kona is more likely to come in either hybrid or electrified form. However, that’s all speculation on our end until Hyundai makes a formal announcement. We’ll keep you posted on future updates on the possible return of the Kona.
