In recent years, the Hyundai Motor Group has been positioning itself as a leader in alternative energy. Its latest announcement is evidence of that, as the South Korean automaker is planning to produce hydrogen fuel cell versions of its entire commercial vehicle lineup by 2028.

Expanding on its announcement, the company said it aims to level the price point of hydrogen-powered vehicles to that of battery electric vehicles by the end of the decade.

Hyundai has extensive experience in hydrogen fuel cell technology. Its first foray into that arena was in 1998 when it established a dedicated research team to work on its ambitious goals.

The Seoul-based company has made significant progress with hydrogen. It launched the NEXO SUV in 2018, followed by a heavy-duty truck called the Xcient Fuel Cell in 2020.

Despite the automaker's bullishness on hydrogen fuel cells, the technology is not without its hurdles. There are valid questions on its reliability and efficiency, but it seems Hyundai is determined to push the boundaries of what's possible with alternative energy.

Hyundai's commercial vehicles are present in many markets globally, including the Philippines. Its Xcient range of heavy-duty gasoline-powered trucks is among the most trusted workhorses locally.

The Xcient range is available in several configurations, including 4x2 and 6x4 versions. One of the most recognizable models in the lineup is the Xcient 6x4. This commercial vehicle is available in a variety of body types, including tractor head, cargo truck, and dump truck models. Engine options include an 11.1-liter and 13-liter turbo-diesel power plant. Power figures range from 335 to over 400 horsepower. There's also a selection of transmission options, from a 10, 12, to a 16-speed manual gearbox.

The Xcient 6x4 boasts a range of standard safety features that includes a reverse warning buzzer, 3-point ELR seat belts, and a speed limiter.
