Hyundai’s IONIQ 9 racks up multiple awards for safety and quality

The IONIQ 9’s list of awards just keeps getting longer.

We reported earlier last week that the Hyundai IONIQ 9 was awarded World’s Best Large SUV by the Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year. Aside from that award, there are more titles under the IONIQ 9’s belt we need to mention.

Starting in the United States, the 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9 was awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation, the organization’s highest safety rating under its latest testing protocols. The vehicle achieved “Good” ratings across all major crashworthiness and crash avoidance categories, including frontal and side impact protection, pedestrian detection, and headlight performance.

According to IIHS test results, the IONIQ 9 maintained structural integrity in frontal and side collisions, preserving occupant survival space for both front and rear passengers. The SUV’s restraint systems and airbags were shown to function effectively in reducing injury risk. 

Meanwhile, over in Europe, the IONIQ 9 received a five-star overall safety rating from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). The model recorded strong scores across multiple categories, including adult occupant protection, safety assistance technologies, and structural safety. Notably, the IONIQ 9 achieved an 87 percent score in child occupant protection. Euro NCAP testing indicated good protection for six- and ten-year-old child dummies in both frontal offset and side barrier impact tests, with maximum points awarded for several assessed body regions.

Beyond safety evaluations, the IONIQ 9 has also been recognized by automotive media organizations and award panels for its design, technology, and usability. The model was named Auto Focus Vehicle of the Year, with judges citing its value and three-row configuration. It also received the German Premium Car of the Year 2026 award, where it was evaluated on factors such as aerodynamic efficiency, interior space, and charging capability.

In comparative testing conducted by AUTO ZEITUNG, the IONIQ 9 ranked first among a group of premium electric SUVs, outperforming competitors from German and Swedish manufacturers. In the United States, the Texas Auto Writers Association named it Electric SUV of Texas, recognizing its interior quality, performance, and versatility. Additional awards include Hispanic Motor Press’s EV of the Year, Northwest Vehicle of the Year, Best BEV at Drive Revolution, and inclusion in Wards’ 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems for its battery and electric propulsion technology.

The Hyundai IONIQ 9 is built on Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which supports a range of electric vehicle configurations. The platform enables features such as 800-volt charging architecture, extended driving range, and a cabin layout capable of seating up to six occupants.
