Omoda announced a few months back that they will be entering the Philippines real soon. What we did not know is that its sister company, Jaecoo will be joining the fray as well with both brands slated to enter the archipelago by the fourth quarter of 2023.
Both brands will have different target markets, with Jaecoo aiming for more rugged, off-road vehicles, and Omoda aiming for the urban crossover segment with classier design philosophies.
It is also of note that both brands will be sharing the showroom floors across the country.
Three new vehicles will be initially released during the launch, the Omoda 5 turbo, Omoda 5 EV, and Jaecoo 7, which were also unveiled during the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show.
The Omoda 5 is a compact crossover that features the brand’s “Art in Vision” design language featuring smooth-flowing lines, with a low drag-coefficient design to help with fuel economy. It is powered by a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine making 144 hp and 230 Nm of torque. An electrified version is also available but final power figures are still being kept under wraps, but as with most EVs in the market, we could expect brisk acceleration figures and fast-charging capability.
The Jaecoo 7 crossover features a more rugged design, with boxier lines and a much more imposing presence. Final specifications are still being kept under wraps, but we could also expect another 1.5-liter turbocharged unit, with possible hybrid and EV variants in the pipeline.
Overall, as we have observed so far at the Shanghai Auto Show, both Omoda and Jaecoo will be offering crossovers with a lot of technology and great designs that we feel could resonate well with the Philippine market.
Omoda and Jaecoo will initially open eight dealerships in major cities around the Philippines, with further expansion in the coming years. Exciting times.
