Kia's well-known electric SUV, the EV9, has been named World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show, which makes this the third consecutive year for the Hyundai Motor Group to grab this prestigious award. Competing against vehicles like Volvo's EX30 and BYD Seal, the EV9 stood out in a field of 38 global contenders. The World Car of the Year is chosen by a group of 100 automotive journalists from 29 countries, who secretly vote based on various criteria.
Although this is big news, you cannot really call it something new since Kia has been on a winning streak with its electric vehicles, building on the success of the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. These vehicles were developed on Kia’s electric vehicle platform, E-GMP.
Aside from this, the EV9 also took the World Electric Vehicle of the Year award, which is totally understandable since the SUV is known for its modern, eco-friendly design and features a 99.8 kWh battery, providing a range of up to 501 kilometers on a single charge. The EV9 has also previously won 17 other awards, including the 2024 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year, contributing to a 65% increase in Kia’s EV sales in the U.S.
Kia CEO Song Ho-sung expressed great honor at the EV9's award, mentioning that this achievement kind of mirrors the company's promise to push the limits when it comes to technology and design.
“We are hugely honored that the 2024 EV9 has been named the World Car of the Year. This triumph is a testament to our unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and design excellence. The Kia EV9’s continued success will drive us to keep delivering exceptional vehicles that redefine the driving experience for customers around the world.”
Aside from the awards above, Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N won the World Performance Car award at the same event, which is Kia's high-performance EV recognized for its speedy acceleration and high-speed capabilities, especially when its N Grin mode is activated. The Ioniq 5 N was previously awarded Car of the Year in Korea, showing its effectiveness and popularity.
Kia is well-known around the world for its strong performance, and winning these awards just proves it. If you're thinking about getting one of these top-performing cars, you can easily get a quote on AutoDeal for the Kia you like.
