Lexus is currently experiencing a series of successes, and following the introduction of the compact LBX, the automaker has now unveiled the brand-new GX, along with the TX prototype. Let's start by examining the GX, which will serve as the foundation for the forthcoming Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
Compared to its predecessor, the previous-generation GX boasted a luxurious and premium feel, while maintaining a slightly more muscular appearance than the LX. However, the design of the next-generation model has taken a full-on off-road approach. We dare say that it could be the Land Cruiser 70 Series’ modern successor.
The GX's design is sleeker than ever, incorporating futuristic elements. The front fascia exudes aggression, featuring thin, swept-back headlamps, the signature Lexus grille, and a skid plate-like finish on the front bumper.
Similar to the all-new LX600, the GX now showcases a more boxy overall physique, with more pronounced lines and edges, especially towards the rear. Speaking of the rear, the GX sports a massive lightbar along with a bulkier-looking rear bumper.
Although there aren't many interior photos available yet, it's evident that the cabin is filled with standard Lexus luxury. The predominantly black interior is adorned with abundant leather and soft-touch materials. The digital instrument cluster is paired with a large touchscreen display mounted prominently in the center of the dashboard.
Under the hood, the all-new GX provides a choice between a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and a 2.4-liter turbo-hybrid. Power output specifications have not yet been disclosed. However, the GX will come equipped with various advanced technologies, including multi-terrain select and crawl control for off-road driving, in addition to the comprehensive Lexus Safety System+ features.
Koji Tsukasaki, the chief engineer of the Lexus GX, stated, "The new GX embodies a way of life and has been developed to offer customers a fresh perspective of Lexus, one that aims to coexist with nature. The key concept of the new GX is to create a Lexus off-roader that epitomizes the core essence of authentic Lexus off-roading. It is not simply a model change, but a game changer that turns a new page for Lexus."
Kazuyuki Ueno, a Lexus takumi (off-road), emphasized the vehicle's off-road performance, ensuring that customers can confidently navigate any rugged terrain. Through extensive testing in various environments and collaboration with professional rally drivers, the GX's driving performance was refined, including suspension characteristics that provide a stable and responsive feel, precise steering response, and excellent visibility of the surrounding environment. The GX's capability to tackle rough terrains promises to take drivers to new and exciting outdoor experiences.
Shuichi Ozaki, a Lexus takumi (on-road), focused on enhancing the GX's on-road performance to deliver a distinctive Lexus driving experience from the moment drivers enter the vehicle. The development team aimed to create a ride quality that would make driving the GX a truly enjoyable experience for all passengers, regardless of people, road conditions, or environment.
We could see the Lexus GX bring the battle against the Land Rover Defender with its design and off-road capabilities, and it could also be our first glimpse of what the new Toyota Prado could potentially look like as well.
