Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has confirmed that it will launch its first electric vehicle, the e-Vitara, next year. The new model will feature a battery-as-a-service (BaaS) option, marking the first time a major automaker in India will use this model. The setup, first used by JSW MG Motor India, allows customers to buy the car separately from the battery and instead pay for battery use through a subscription or rental plan. This makes it easier to maintain and lowers the initial cost for buyers.
While full pricing and launch details are still unreleased, Maruti Suzuki says the e-Vitara has an ARAI-certified range of 543 kilometers on a single charge. It also earned a 5-star safety rating from Bharat NCAP for both adult and child protection. Every variant will come with seven airbags as standard.
According to Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi, the e-Vitara was made to remove common barriers to EV ownership, especially range anxiety. To support its new EV lineup, the company has built more than 2,000 charging points across 1,100 cities, including the top EV hubs and major intercity routes. Maruti Suzuki has also partnered with 13 major charge point operators and aggregators to expand customer access to charging facilities nationwide.
"We have established a robust network of over 2,000 Maruti Suzuki exclusive charging points across our sales and service touchpoints, spanning more than 1,100 cities. This includes the top 100 cities with high EV penetration, along with additional locations across the country, which have been finalised to ensure that customers travel worry-free inter-city. In addition, we are collaborating with 13 leading Charge Point Operators and aggregators to further offer access to a vast charging network.”
With this network in place, Maruti Suzuki says the e-Vitara aims to make electric driving more practical, convenient, and worry-free for everyone.
