Toyota Auto Body, a manufacturing subsidiary of Toyota, is set to show a one-off version of the 2024 Land Cruiser 70 at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January. The special edition of the off-roader has been given a matte black finish and is provided with a range of aftermarket accessories.
Toyota is reintroducing the Land Cruiser 70 to the Japanese market, and the facelifted model is said to have undergone several modifications. One of which is the addition of a snorkel, a feature for water fording that improves the SUV's ability to go into hard terrains without risking engine hydrolock. Additionally, the vehicle also includes a modified front bumper made to support a winch, which increases its utility in off-road and recovery situations.
In terms of exterior design, the Land Cruiser 70 is made with chrome-finished wing mirrors and black wheels, a chrome barrel, and off-road tires. While the chrome mirrors add a touch of style, their suitability for off-roading situations might be limited.
The new model is powered by a 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, delivering 201 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. The engine is coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission to guarantee good driving performance in various conditions. If this setup looks familiar to you, that’s because it’s the same one found in the Toyota Fortuner.
The special Land Cruiser 70 will be displayed together with the classic J40 Land Cruiser during the exhibit at the Tokyo Auto Salon from January 12 to 14 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.
Toyota's decision to reintroduce the Land Cruiser 70 in Japan, years after its discontinuation, may be the company's plan to keep its off-road history while meeting the current standards of modern safety and driving needs. The event is a much-look-forward one for fans of Toyota's off-road vehicles, as it gives a peek into the future of one of the brand's iconic models. If you plan to see the vehicle in person, make sure to visit the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon and stay tuned for further details.
