The Mazda CX-5’s gasoline range of engines gets notable upgrades, with the base 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G having an increased horsepower figure while the larger 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G now gets cylinder deactivation.
Apart from its 2.2-liter SkyActiv-D diesel benefitting from a 10 hp jump, the smaller 2.0-liter gasoline mill also gets an increased number. Specifically, from 154 hp, its figure went up to 163 hp, which is about a 9 hp over the prior iteration. The base gasoline engine is available on the Pro and FWD Sport variants, with the previous horsepower figure still maintained up until now.
On the other hand, the CX-5’s 2.5-liter gasoline engine now gets cylinder deactivation which should deliver better fuel economy for the compact crossover. This is achieved through the system which switches between four and two cylinders when needed. Even the 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G gets this technology, unfortunately, it’s only limited to the manual transmission option, which we don’t have in the Philippine market. This technology is not new to Mazda since the cylinder deactivation system was first introduced in the Mazda6.
As previously showcased, the CX5’s 2021 model year also gets interior upgrades, including the Mazda Connect 2 infotainment system, which was carried over from newer Mazda products such as the Mazda3 and CX-30. Select variants on international markets also replace the interior wood trim with a high-gloss black material, plus, buyers can opt for a leather and suede combo seat upholstery which does add that sporty and premium touch to its crossover.
While the following updates are still limited to other markets, we do hope that Mazda Philippines will also consider upgrading its well-loved compact offering. Locally, the Mazda CX-5 continues being sold with four trims available, options include three gasoline variants and one diesel. Like the middle child CX-8, the CX-5 for the Philippine market is sourced from Malaysia. With all that said, let’s cross our fingers in anticipation of an updated model.
