Mazda CX-60

Mazda Philippines has provided further details about the upcoming launch of the CX-60, the company's first-ever model of its kind, following the announcement of its June 9, 2023 release date. The latest information confirms the powertrain specifications of the vehicle.

The CX-60, developed by Mazda's Large Product Group, adopts a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. This design choice allowed engineers to optimize the powertrain, resulting in handling-centric features like an independent front Double Wishbone suspension.

The platform on which the CX-60 is built has a unique advantage, as it allows Mazda to accommodate longitudinally-mounted engines. Specifically for the Philippine market, Mazda has confirmed that the premium compact SUV will be equipped with an electrified 3.3-liter inline-six engine.

The 3.3-liter e-Skyactiv-G engine, developed with the "right-sizing" concept, generates 284 horsepower at 5,000 to 6,000 rpm and 450 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm. These specifications enable the CX-60 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds, with a top speed of 219 km/h—which is rather quick for a crossover in the compact segment.

The engine is also equipped with Mazda's 48-volt M Hybrid Boost mild hybrid system. This system provides electric assistance at low speeds or during low engine loads, resulting in improved fuel efficiency compared to the non-turbo engine of the CX-5. Additionally, the CX-60 equipped with this hybrid system will be exempt from number coding restrictions, a bonus for potential buyers.

The CX-60 will be paired with a newly-developed Skyactiv-Drive eight-speed automatic transmission. This innovative gearbox incorporates a clutch instead of a torque converter, resulting in smooth and precise gear changes. It also allows for more accurate control of the M Hybrid electric motor.

While it has not been officially confirmed, there is a possibility that Mazda Philippines may offer an electrified diesel version of the CX-60, as the brand has previously received homologation approval for the diesel engine. Globally, the diesel engine is available in two power output options, depending on whether it is a rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configuration, with horsepower ratings of 200 and 254 respectively, and a torque rating of 550 Nm.

Mazda Philippines has also confirmed that the gasoline variant of the CX-60 will feature a rear-biased i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system.

Regarding pricing, no official details have been released, but we are expecting somewhere in the range of P3 million pesos. The CX-60 is positioned to compete with premium offerings and is also Mazda’s first entry into the premium category. Despite the expected higher price, Mazda asserts that their newest offering offers a comparable or even better experience to these premium competitors.

Speaking of experience, we were able to see the Mazda CX-60 at the Mazda Brand Space Osaka showroom last January, and all we can say is we are very excited for this premium crossover to reach our shores.
