Mazda’s next CX-5 is going hybrid for the first time

After years of sticking to gas engines, Mazda is finally giving the CX-5 a hybrid setup. The full reveal is just around the corner, but we already got a peek at what’s coming.

It’s finally happening: the Mazda CX-5 is going hybrid. The first official teaser is out, and while full details are coming soon, we now know a cleaner, more efficient version is on the way.

Mazda has released official teaser images of the upcoming next-generation CX-5, which will be fully revealed on July 10. The company confirmed that the crossover will have a new design, updated tech, and a hybrid version developed by Mazda itself. The CX-5 is one of Mazda’s best-selling models, so many are looking forward to this full update.

The photos show a front end with slimmer headlights that connect to the grille, which now has a new design but still looks familiar to current Mazda fans. The lower part of the bumper looks wider, and the overall front feels a bit sharper than before. Around the wheels, there is black plastic cladding that gives the crossover a slightly tougher look. Higher trims may replace that with body-colored panels. While the rear of the car hasn’t been shown yet, earlier spy shots suggest new thin LED taillights and dual exhaust pipes.

The shape of the body is still similar to the old CX-5, but the details have been changed to make it look newer and cleaner. It keeps its own identity and doesn’t look like a copy of Mazda’s other crossovers, like the CX-50 or CX-90. Mazda also shared that the new CX-5 will come with a self-charging hybrid setup. The hybrid system was made in-house by Mazda instead of opting for a Toyota-sourced hybrid powertrain like in the CX-50. It will also use a new engine called SkyActiv-Z, which is expected to give better fuel economy and stronger performance. However, this new engine will not be ready until late 2027, so the early versions of the hybrid CX-5 will likely carry over the current generation’s engines for now.

Inside, the new CX-5 is expected to have more space, a cleaner design, and better materials. It will probably borrow some features from Mazda’s bigger and newer models like the CX-90. A bigger screen and better tech can also be expected in this updated version. The current CX-5 came out back in 2016, so this full redesign is long overdue. The new model is expected to be sold globally as a 2026 model, and it will compete with other popular hybrid crossovers like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester.
