MG Philippines entering a new age, and it is bringing two new EVs into the fray. With the EV segment in the Philippines being as young as it is for now, SAIC’s MG brand feels that it could make a big splash with these two mainstream electric cars, the MG 4 EV and the MG Marvel R EV.
The more affordable MG 4 EV makes good on its value proposition. It may not look like it, but the model has the specs and the price to back up its mainstream appeal. The hatchback takes on a more car-like appearance, and it brings a lot of style to the table thanks to its bright colors, its sleek front end, and rear taillights that give it a very striking “second impression” as it zips by.
There are two variants available in the lineup, the Standard, and the Lux. The standard goes for P1,468,888 and the Lux variant goes for P1,738,888. There are two powertrain variations on offer, with the Standard receiving a 167 hp-capable electric motor with 250 Nm of torque, while the Lux gets a 201 hp-capable motor also with 250 Nm of torque. The range for the Standard from a full charge is estimated at 350 km, and the Lux from a full charge can go up to 435 km.
For the other features on the MG 4 EV, you get all the standard ABS with EBD, traction control, stability control, and airbags all around, but MG is also making autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian detection, speed alert, blind spot detection, lane keeping assist, a tire pressure monitoring system, and also intelligent headlight control to all models.
As for the interior, you get a nice and spacious five-seat cabin finished in black, and also a 10-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
Meanwhile, the bigger brother in the electric duo is the MG Marvel R EV will only come with one variant, and the model will be available at a price of P2,588,888. A compact electric crossover, it is a five-seater as well, but with more space and still with a capable electric motor.
Rated at 183 hp with 255 Nm of torque, the model has a gear up on the MG 4 with a two-speed electric vehicle transmission, and unlike the MG 4 EV whose driven wheels are in the front, the Marvel R EV is rear-wheel drive.
The other notable features on this vehicle also include the standard array of safety systems, ABS, EBD, traction and stability control, plus the works, but it also gets autonomous braking, other obstacle detection features like on the MG 4, speed alert, blind spot detection, lane keeping assist, a tire-pressure monitoring system, and more.
On top of that, it gets a remarkable upgrade in infotainment compared to the MG 4 EV, with a 19.8-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that outputs audio to eight speakers.
These two models are now available in the Philippines, and they’re a very interesting entry since they also mark the brand’s first-ever EVs in the country. Priced very competitively, we can expect that other brands will pay attention to SAIC MG’s efforts in electrification as the pricing of the MG 4 EV undercuts most EV vehicles on sale in the country at the moment. For now, these two models are the ones to watch if you are looking for an affordable EV in the Philippines.
