Mitsubishi quietly rolls out updates for the Triton Athlete in Japan

The current Mitsubishi Triton has been available in our market for two years and was first introduced globally in 2023. During its time here, the Triton has remained largely unchanged since its initial launch. However, recent news from Japan suggests that an update may be on the horizon.

The Triton is offered in Japan in two trim levels: the GLS and the GSR, with the GSR being the equivalent of the Triton Athlete we have here. Starting with the chassis, the pickup now features Yamaha performance dampers installed at the front and rear of its ladder frame. These dampers sit between the body shell and frame, quietly absorbing chassis distortions while cutting down noise and vibrations for a smoother drive. On top of that, Mitsubishi says the front and rear shock absorbers themselves have been retuned for sharper responsiveness, enhancing both ride comfort and handling.

On the outside, the Triton GSR gets practical upgrades like a tailgate assist, making loading and unloading the cargo bed easier than ever. The rear styling bar has been removed, giving owners more freedom for personal customization. Inside, the cabin sees subtle but noticeable changes: the center console and door handle trims now come in dark titanium, and a new Panasonic nanoe-X air filtration system improves in-cabin air quality.

As for the beating heart, the twin-turbo 2.4-liter diesel engine will be unchanged, and that’s to be expected as the 4N16 is a new engine that debuted alongside the sixth-generation Triton. Still, as a refresher, the version of the 4N16 inside the GSR/Athlete pumps out 201 hp and 470 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the drive wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

For now, these updates are exclusive to the Japanese market, but with any hope, the updated Triton will soon make its way to other markets, ours included.
