Last week, the Philippine government greenlit a P60 billion incentives package with the purpose of enticing electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers to produce their vehicles here in the country. This is part of the government’s move to position the Philippines as a regional automotive manufacturing hub.
The incentives package, or Executive Order (EO) 121, puts into effect the Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy (EVIS), the country’s largest incentives package in history for car manufacturers.
Following the signing of EVIS, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines welcomed the issuance of the EO, reaffirming its earlier pledge to produce hybrids in the country. If you may remember, Mitsubishi announced its intent to join the EVIS program back in April during a meeting with President Marcos and Takao Kato, CEO of MMC.
According to Mitsubishi, the EVIS program represents a significant step forward in accelerating vehicle electrification, strengthening local automotive manufacturing, and supporting the continued growth of the Philippine automotive industry. In line with this, MMPC will participate in the program through Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s P7-billion investment to locally produce hybrid electric vehicles in the Philippines.
“Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation welcomes the issuance of the Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy (EVIS) Executive Order, which marks an important milestone in advancing vehicle electrification and strengthening the automotive industry in the Philippines. Backed by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s P7 billion investment commitment, we are ready to support the government’s vision through the local production of hybrid electric vehicles, further enhancing the country’s manufacturing capabilities and competitiveness.”
Bringing hybrid production to local soil is being framed as a fresh chapter for MMPC rather than just another business expansion. The move is expected to strengthen the country's manufacturing base, give the local supply chain room to grow, and push the Philippines further along in its shift toward cleaner transportation options.
Hirakata adds, “Through this investment, we look forward to creating greater value for the Philippine economy, supporting the country’s sustainability objectives, generating opportunities across the automotive ecosystem, and contributing to the continued growth of local vehicle manufacturing.”
