The new Honda Civic Type R has arrived in the country. Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) has revealed that its latest performance model is now available at select dealerships. The news comes as a bit of a surprise, but a welcome one at that. Nearly four years into its debut, the local-spec model has been due for an update, and Honda seems to have delivered.
From the exterior, the changes are readily apparent. Redesigned bumpers flank the front and rear, with faux carbon fiber splitters and red accents completing the sporty look. The side skirts and rear spoiler remain the same, however.
Inside the Type R, there are a few noticeable updates. The steering wheel on this model features Alcantara material, which is durable and helps add to that premium feel. Honda has also replaced the shifter knob with a titanium teardrop style design. Beyond that, the dashboard has been updated with carbon fiber styling with touches of red all around.
The new Civic Type R also gets Honda Sensing technology, a suite of advanced safety systems that aim to help drivers respond better to their environment. These features include adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation, road departure mitigation, lane-keeping assist, and lane departure warning.
The heart of the new Civic Type R stays the same for this release. A 2.0-liter turbocharged VTEC engine produces 305 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The tried and tested engine connects to a smooth 6-speed manual gearbox featuring Honda's rev match control system.
If you're a fan of this engine, you better act quickly. Reports indicate that this could be one of the last non-hybrid models of the Civic Type R. If true, it would mean that future iterations could ax the manual gearbox as well. We might be near the end of an era, so embrace it while you can.
The new Civic Type R is available now at Honda dealerships for P3,210,000. Three color options are available, including Championship White, Racing Blue, and Sonic Gray.
