Hyundai’s growing its EV family again, but this one might not leave China. The new electric SUV is called the Hyundai Elexio, and it’s the first Hyundai EV made specifically for the Chinese market.
The Elexio was developed through Beijing Hyundai, the joint venture between Hyundai and the Chinese company BAIC, which started back in 2002. While Hyundai has released a lot of electric vehicles globally—like the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, Kona Electric, and the bigger IONIQ 9—this new Elexio is only for China, at least for now.
Hyundai hasn’t revealed much about the inside or the technical details yet. The focus during the launch was on the design. Judging by its size, the Elexio seems to sit between the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9, likely falling into the midsize SUV category.
In terms of design, the Elexio shares a few things with the Ioniq 9. It has a smooth front, a full-width light bar, and a new version of Hyundai’s cube design used in both the headlights and the light bar. The sides of the car have sharp wheel arches and strong lines, giving it a modern look. The rear D-pillar is angled forward, similar to what we’ve seen on the new Nexo hydrogen SUV. The rear end also has a full-width light bar that bends under the rear glass.
For now, Hyundai hasn’t shared any plans to sell the Elexio outside of China, but it’s a clear sign that the brand is continuing to grow its EV lineup with market-specific models. We’re still waiting to know if it’ll reach other countries, but for now, check out what Hyundai already has on AutoDeal.com.ph.
