The BYD Seagull is set to get a major overhaul, with the next-generation electric hatchback growing significantly in size and gaining a fifth seat, rear-wheel drive, and a more sophisticated suspension setup.
Revealed through Chinese government certification filings, the second-generation model is expected to go on sale in its home market before the end of 2026. The larger dimensions mark a notable departure from the current model, with the new Seagull measuring 4,205 mm long, 1,810 mm wide, and 1,570 mm tall. Its 2,650 mm wheelbase is also 150 mm longer than before.
That increase in size allows BYD to move from the current four-seat layout to a more conventional five-seat configuration. The added space also comes with changes underneath, as the new model reportedly swaps its front-mounted electric motor for a rear-mounted unit, making it rear-wheel drive. This layout also frees up room beneath the hood for a front trunk, or frunk.
Another significant mechanical change is found at the rear. The outgoing Seagull uses a torsion-beam setup, while the new model is expected to feature an independent multi-link rear suspension. The move could give the electric hatchback a more sophisticated chassis setup compared to its predecessor, which will also mean a better ride than before.
Chinese certification documents list a single 95 kW electric motor producing 127 hp for the new Seagull. The new model is also expected to offer two battery options, with a 30 kWh pack providing a claimed 259 km WLTP range and a larger 39.2kWh unit extending that figure to 340 km.
The exterior changes are paired with an updated cabin. The new Seagull gets a larger infotainment screen, a two-spoke steering wheel, and a redesigned center console. Physical controls for the infotainment and climate systems are also expected, while a wireless smartphone charging pad appears to be part of the updated equipment.
The new model will also ride on larger 16-inch alloy wheels with 205/60 tires, compared to the narrower tire setup of the current car. A LiDAR sensor mounted near the top of the windshield also points to the availability of more advanced driver-assistance technology through BYD's DiPilot 300 system in China, tech we don’t have in the Seagull available here.
As the next-gen Seagull has yet to launch in China, it could be some time before it heads off to other markets, including ours. For now, visit the BYD Car Guide to view the brand’s latest lineup of cars in the Philippines.
