Nissan and Mitsubishi join forces for EV development

New power pair alert! Nissan and Mitsubishi Corporation are teaming up to develop electric vehicles (EVs) and related services that could help tackle societal challenges in Japan, such as the declining population and the resulting driver shortages. 

The two car powerhouses recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore joint initiatives in creating next-generation EVs. Their collaboration aims to address these challenges by improving mobility services, energy management, and creating more vibrant communities.

Makoto Uchida, Nissan's President & CEO, mentions Nissan's pledge to build an ecosystem that expands mobility possibilities and societal potential; where he also talks about the desire to solve regional issues and create cities focused on the future through new mobility services and energy management. On the other hand, Katsuya Nakanishi, President & CEO of Mitsubishi Corporation, acknowledges the transformative phase in the mobility sector driven by technological innovation and decarbonization. 

Nissan has been active in various projects to improve mobility and energy systems, which include providing mobility services in Namie Town, Fukushima Prefecture, conducting autonomous driving tests in Yokohama, and developing energy management systems that integrate EV battery storage with renewable energy sources. 

Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Corporation is working on similar initiatives that utilize regional energy resources, aim for carbon neutrality, and strive to solve local issues through innovative mobility solutions, like AI-driven on-demand transportation and autonomous driving tests.

Both companies recognize the need to develop new technologies and service models to address specific regional challenges. The announced collaborative effort will mainly concentrate on creating sustainable business models that leverage EVs for next-generation mobility services and energy-related services, initially in Japan.
